Melinda McAuliff, Teacher at Prana Yoga and Founder of iRocYoga
Yoga has something new to teach us in every stage in life, and if we are truly open to it – we can find something new to be learned in each practice and each pose. Some days the lessons may be mechanical – shifting the position of your foot in Warrior 1 or leveling your hips in Half Pigeon. At other times, the lessons go deeper to reveal opportunities for healing, correction and growth.
I have personally found my yoga to be a place of self-discovery, forgiveness, acceptance, gratitude and love. In yoga, I’ve found and nurtured the voice that says “you are enough, just as you are.”
Through my teaching I hope to share that message with my students as well. It is my desire, that no matter how many things are pulling them in different directions on any given day, they will be able to stop amidst it all, take a deep cleansing breath and know “I am enough, just as I am.”
I think being able to do this in the chaos of life starts with the practice of Savasana – my favorite thing to teach in any class. Bringing others through a practice so they can come to a place where they are able to let go of it all, and simply be in the present moment, is the greatest honor for me as a teacher.
By giving ourselves permission to let go, we give ourselves permission to simply be ... nothing more, nothing less, than existing in the splendor that makes each of us so uniquely wonderful.
Looking ahead to my continued growth as a yogi and a teacher, I am excited to complete my second 200-hour teacher training this year with Francois at Open Sky Yoga. I’m also continuing work to grow the iRocYoga community through information sharing, events and collaborative campaigns. Rochester has an amazing community of students, teachers and studios. It’s been incredible to see people come together – transcending the things that might separate us – to celebrate the things that connect us.
The ladies at the Rochester Showroom have been so supportive of the yoga community since opening their doors here. It’s an incredible honor to join the team as an ambassador!
