Carissa was drawn to yoga over 10 years ago as a way to break out of a routine and experience more physical activity. Yet, she discovered early a mental and spiritual side that she didn’t expect, but loved uncovering. Carissa’s yoga practice has colored her life with both joy and centeredness. She completed vinyasa yoga teacher training at Flow Yoga Center in Washington DC, where she studied with Debra Mishalove, Michael Plasha, Simon Park, Alanna Kaivalya, Alison West and others. And, in 2012, Carissa completed a second vinyasa teacher training in Washington, DC with internationally renowned yoga teacher Seane Corn.
Carissa has taught students of varying interests, from sweaty flowing vinyasa students to peaceful fertility-seeking yoga mamas. In January 2011, Carissa brought a dream to life and opened Breathing Room.
Through her classes, Carissa invites students to be honest with themselves, befriend their bodies, honor each moment and cultivate inward focus. Her classes are infused with great music, humor, plenty of options and encouragement. She blends a creative, steady flowing class with a healthy dose of alignment cues and assists. Each class includes breath work, movement, awareness and, finally, sweet stillness!
At Breathing Room, Carissa leads classes, trains new yoga teachers, and directs the day-to-day operations of the studio. But outside of the studio, you might find Carissa having dance parties with her two small children, perusing the farmer’s market, whipping up a new meal, or embracing Maine’s natural beauty with her husband at her side.
