Jody has been a practitioner and dedicated student of Ashtanga since 1995 . She is Halifax’s first Ashtanga teacher, offering her first class to the community in 1998. Jody continued teaching as resident yoga teacher at the YMCA and Dalhousie Dance studio until 2004 when she opened her own dedicated studio. She has established a loyal following of students over the years which includes beginners, experienced practitioners, young and old. ‘ We love beginners … the amazing thing about the practice is its ability to be adapted to all ages and experience levels – I teach the practice from the perspective that anyone can do it and enjoy its benefits.’
As an on–going student of the practice , Jody devotes one month per year to her study of ashtanga and as well, maintains a regular daily practice despite a busy teaching schedule . ‘My ability to continue developing as a teacher depends on my continuing as a student of the practice and maintaining a committed daily practice – I am taught by my teachers that you teach as you practice.’ She is currently a committed student of senior teacher Nancy Gildoff and has studied regularly with her since 2006 –meeting Nancy while in Mysore India studying with the Sri ’K. Pattabhi Jois and his family .
Jody has enjoyed the influence of many other senior ashtanga teachers both through teacher training and independent study including Tim Miller, David Swensen, Iyengar teacher Hart Lazer and, of course, holds a special place in her heart for her first teacher Beryl Bender Birch who taught her the practice.
Her studio, Ashtanga Yoga Halifax is dedicated to teaching the practice in the tradition of Sri K. Pattabhi Jois and is Halifax’s only dedicated Ashtanga studio. Jody continues to teach at Dalhousie Dance studio part –time in addition to her studio teaching.
