When our Calgary Store ambassador, Andrea Rice hits the shore for a beach run she ditches her hair tie, tunes, shoes and inhibitions.

andrea’s recipe for a perfect beach run

set your pony tail free
Seriously, just do it! Ditch the elastic, the headband and the bobby pins and let your hair run wild as you hit the sand. Whether it's been stuffed into a toque (Canadian-speak for hat) all winter long or simply pulled away from your face for a long, long time, nothing says freedom like letting the mane blow in the breeze while you're footing it through the sand. It will feel awesome.

sink your toes into the sand
Barefoot running is all the rage right now but for those of us not quite ready to hit the pavement naked, beach running is a great sampler. The first couple of times you hit the beach barefoot, cut down your distance and duration to see how it feels. Running on a soft surface like sand will call upon the muscles in your feet, legs and core to work a little harder. Post-run, expect to be a little sore in few new places. Remember not to push your body through any physical pain – test the waters but ultimately do what feels right for you. If barefoot ain’t your thing, bring your sneakers to the beach with you.

ditch the watch
You won’t run as fast as you do on the pavement but every second of beach running will be time very well spent. It's a nice way to remember that running is awesome just for the sake of running.

leave the tunes behind
Unplug from your headphones and listen to the waves crashing, the birds chirping and the people playing. How refreshing to run with a true awareness of your surroundings. Let your body fall into the rhythm of the natural soundtrack.

dive in
What better way to finish off a run on the beach than to go for a swim! The best part of running on the beach is that sweet, sweet, plunge into the ocean to cool off. Enjoy it! After all, you earned it!

For those of us living in the frosty north, there’s a very small window to enjoy the warmer temps that summer will bring. How do you infuse your workouts with a little summer love?

Summer, if it's done right, is alternating bouts of heating up and cooling down; and being so busy having fun that you've barely got time to splash water on your face. Summer is also about gorging yourself on the juiciest fruits that nature has to offer. I love the way fruit refreshes me - it's like a big drink of water and a shot of energy - combine that with a sharp cheese like feta or blue and you have a healthy and hedonistic summer snack.

watermelon and feta salad

8-ounce package baby arugula

4 cups watermelon (cubed)

8-ounce package feta cheese, crumbled

1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar glaze

Spread arugula on a large platter. Scatter watermelon and feta over the arugula.
Drizzle with balsamic glaze and pepper to taste.

(If you can’t find balsamic glaze in the supermarket, you can make it by reducing 3/4 of a cup of balsamic vinegar in a small saucepan to 3 tablespoons)

fig and mozzarella salad

1 bowl of soft, green, salad leaves

handful of basil

6 figs

6 medium bocconcini balls

6 slices of parma ham

6 tablespoons of oil

3 tablespoons of lemon juice

1 tablespoon of honey

This is a very visceral recipe to get your fingers into. Tear up the basil, the bocconcini and the ham. Toss these with some soft green leaves and place the cut, splayed figs on top. Combine the oil, juice and honey and drizzle over the salad. Season to taste. (When choosing your figs, you want them soft and ripe - they don't ripen after they've been picked. Fig connoisseurs look for a droplet in the small hole at the bottom of the fruit.)

image: flickr-Dito

caramelized pear and blue cheese salad

2 tablespoons of butter

3 tablespoons of white vinegar

1 tablespoon brown sugar

2 pears (quartered and cored)

1/2 cup of walnuts

4-ounces arugula

6-ounces blue cheese (sliced)

Heat the butter, vinegar and sugar in a fry pan. Add the pear and walnuts and cook over a medium heat until the pear is soft. Place the arugula in bowls and top with the pears, walnuts and blue cheese. Spoon the pan juices over the top.

Summer fruits and salads are more refreshing than that shower after hot yoga. We'd love for you to share some of the ways you maximize the summer crop and your favourite go-to summer salad ideas in the comment section below.

Sometimes a vacation is just a few hours away. We recently took a road trip to the Gorge in Quincy, Washington for the 2011 Sasquatch Music Festival. We found it amazing to find such an event close to home that we could fit into our busy schedule. The Gorge was the most unbelievable backdrop for us to relax on the hill, and catch some of our latest favourite bands.

great bands to catch

We were so excited to catch some of our latest, favourite bands at this fest. If you get lucky you may catch them touring this summer.

Matt & Kim - One word: AMAZING! This was our first time catching this two piece band, and we fell in love! The energy was awesome and they had they crowd beyond entertained! Download: Daylight

Robyn - We have been running to her songs all spring and we were super-stoked to see her live! Of course she did not disappoint! Download : Dancing On My Own

Fitz and the Tantrums - You can’t help move around when listening to this band. Download : MoneyGrabber

don’t worry…there’s more!

That’s not it for the summer music festivals. Be sure to catch some more great music at these future festivals this summer.

Lollapalooza. Chicago, IL August 5-7

Bumbershoot. Seattle, WA September 3-5

Wanderlust, Bondville, VT, June 23-26

Wanderlust, Tahoe, CA, July 28-31

(Wanderlust is a series of yoga-cum-music festivals. We'll be there bending and rocking out. We'll also be offering goal coaching sessions in Vermont)

what to bring

Being prepared for a three-day music festival that includes camping AND travelling light doesn't come off without a little planning. Here are our suggestions to keep the experience happy and easy.

Layer up! The Gorge was warm during the day and quite cold in the evenings. Be sure to pack layers! We luckily packed a few of our lululemon favourites for the task! (Who knew wunder unders and vinyasa scarves could get any better right?)

Remember to pack your water bottle. Being in the sun all day can make you thirsty. Most festivals have refill stations for your reusable water bottles. It’s a great way to stay hydrated and skip those pricey bottles of water at concessions.

Grab an air mattress! Some of us aren’t the most experienced campers. An air mattress can turn a tent into a home!

Don't forget ear Plugs. Sleeping in a parking lots of festival goers…ear plugs are a must!

We try to keep our ears to the ground for up-coming events. If you're pumped about a festival this summer, let us know about it. Maybe we'll see you there.

Lately, scientists in the sunscreen industry have been in the metaphorical hot seat. Sunscreen use is at an all time high (good) but so are skin cancer rates (bad). 'Sunscreen causes cancer' would've made a much more sensational title for this post but it's actually misuse of sunscreen that's adding to cancer's success. People have a false sense of protection with sunscreens. Instead we should be getting smaller doses of sun and covering up more.

common misconceptions

my high SPF sunscreen blocks the sun's radiation

There are different types of radiation from the sun. SPF (the sunscreen measurement we're most familiar with) refers to the level of protection against Ultraviolet B rays (UVB). This is great for stopping the burn because UVB rays are the ones that damage the skin and cause sunburn. Unfortunately, roughly 95% of the sun’s rays are the dastardly UVA rays that cause wrinkling and sagging. More importantly, they also trigger cell mutations that may initiate skin cancer. Sunscreens offer such minimal protection against UVA rays that in most cases is not even indicated on the bottle.

I'm not burnt so I'm fine

Sunscreen provides a filter allowing us to spend all day in the sun and moderate the rate of tan, from beige to brown sugar. But the sun's rays that burn you are different from the ones that contribute to cancer. Think of sun burn as a smoke alarm. If you've been in the sun long enough to get burnt, you've been out long enough for UVAs to do damage. If you turn off your smoke alarm (aka putting on sunscreen) you won't know if the kitchen's on fire.

the sun is bad for you

Staying out of the sun all day could be as detrimental to your health as staying in the sun all day. When sunlight touches your skin, your body makes vitamin D (you may not have heard about it because no-one's worked out how to make money out of it). Vitamin D plays an amazing role in preventing osteoporosis and breast cancer. Try to get small doses, often. Don't try to cram a year's worth of sun into one day at the beach.

protect yourself against uva

Sunscreen messes with your body's natural defenses against the sun's radiation: a sunburn is a gentle reminder to get out of the sun before the bad radiation shows up. The best way to protect yourself from UVA radiation but still get a good dose of vitamin D is to adopt the philosophy of “everything in moderation”. Go out in the sun (sans sunscreen) but don't stay out too long. When determining 'how long is too long' take these factors into consideration:

your skin tone

the heat of the day, cloud coverage etc.

the time of day (burn time will be longer in the evenings and early mornings)

location (In New Zealand the burn time is announced as part of the weather report and is usually under 10 minutes)

Make the most of hats (to protect the delicate skin around your eyes), shady trees or a shirt to enjoy the outdoors without putting yourself at risk. Maybe we can even bring back the parasol.

avoid wrinkles (& the big C) with this gear

Our Sunbeam and Sun Blocker tops have a UPF rating of 45- 50 (the top rating possible). This means that they block upwards of 97.5 of UVA & UVB rays.

– we all have that one sweater that goes with everything – and you need to be prepared. What happens if your campsite just so happens to sit next to a Dirty Dancing-esque resort and you all decide to crash the party? It’s always smart to have a go-to piece.

– Okay friends, be strategic when it comes to picking your blanket, whether it's for sand, grass, or some other miscellaneous surface (hey, I'm not a judge-y camper). Mexican blankets are fabulous; thick enough to not feel sticks and rocks and beautiful enough to add a little boho vibe. Straw mats are also a chic and practical choice. Just don't make one of two classic blanket mistakes: using a too-small towel as your blanket or the ultimate cardinal sin of blanket behavior, bringing your childhood blankie. You might think it's sweet, but lying on your mothball-scented Strawberry Shortcake comforter isn't as cute & ironic as you think.

– One of the best ways to soak in the beauty of your camping spot is doing sunrise yoga. Just imagine - gazing out from the familiar home of upward dog at the stunning sight of the sun rising into the sky, followed by a deep, full breath of fresh air. I'm feeling serene just writing this!
– Sunshine + good tunes = camping nirvana. Bring a ghetto blaster (see above) coupled with great music and you've got a new soundtrack for your life. On that note, see below my favorite songs for mellow summertime hangin'.

"World’s Got A Handle" – Sun Wizard
This might be the new greatest road trip song of all time.

"The Birds" – Serenades
The Swedes do it again – this new Scandinavian group just released an album full of ethereal, catchy beats.

"Young Blood" – The Naked & Famous
This song sounds like skinny-dipping…if that is even possible.

"Pumped Up Kicks" – Foster the People
The hottest track around right now. These dudes sound awesome and look like Jack Johnson’s hot little brothers.

"2 Hearts" – Digitalism
Check out this new song from the most underrated posse out of Australia. Warning: not for the casual camping trip.

"Lizstomania" – Edwin Van Cleef (featuring Jane Hurley)
This clever cover of Phoenix’s monster hit will have you basking in the late afternoon sunshine, praying for the moment to never end.

"Towers" – Bon Iver
Just when you thought it couldn’t be done…Bon Iver goes and releases an even better album. Perfect for late night marshmallow roasts and friendships.

This summer has been sweet, hasn't it? Endless sunshine has made for countless ways to sweat once a day - from the beach to the trails, the opportunities to spend time outdoors are endless. That being said, on the days when it gets TOO hot I always head to the gym for a dose of air-conditioned coolness.

This brings me to my next point. You know how a song can instantly transport you back into a specific place or time in your life? Well lemme tell you, all these early morning gym seshs have had me reminiscing about high school, and more specifically, hip hop. I forgot how fun it is to sweat to - the beats are sure to keep you moving on even the slowest mornings! With no further ado, may I present my all-time favourite hip hop workout playlist. *Note: Be careful playing these at work - Colt 45 consumption is considered unacceptable in most office environments.

SHUTTERBUGG - BIG BOI & CUTTY

Big Boi, one half of the magical tandem known as Outkast, released another solo project a month ago and it might be the coolest album of the year. I take back what I said last month about Drake having the song of the summer - Shutterbugg is hotter (sorry, Drake - it isn't personal... I just hadn't heard THIS yet). And don't worry, he and Andre 3000 are still cool - Dre produced half the tracks on this album. Play this for the haters who say all new hip hop sucks.

TIPSY - J-KWON

Is this song mature? No. Is the beat sick? Absolutely. Just let it happen!

1970 SOMETHIN' - NOTORIOUS B.I.G. FEATURING THE GAME AND FAITH EVANS

A lot of the time, posthumous duets are contrived and unnatural feeling. This track, however, feels like all three ducked into a studio one night and cut something awesome... and as per usual with Biggie, the lyrics are an 11 out of 10.

BABY DON'T GO - FABOLOUS FEATURING T-PAIN

T-Pain raps about something other than being on a boat. Miracles ensue.

STILL NOT A PLAYER - BIG PUN FEATURING JOE

Still a banger in the clubs 10 years later, Joe's dedication to wearing the freshest mock necks in the history of crooners is simply the cherry on top.

CHERCHEZ LA GHOST - GHOSTFACE KILLAH

Wu-Tang Clan's eight main members all made fantastic side albums while still recording with the samurai-loving supergroup. This is my favourite, mostly because of Madame Majestic's weirdly edgy yet Edith Piaf-y voice.

SENSUAL SEDUCTION - SNOOP DOGG

Louis XIV style hat, including feather? Check. Electro beats & auto-tune? Check. Hookah pipe with gold fillagree handle? Check. Snoop Dogg getting away with all of it and making it awesome because he is Snoop Dogg? Check, check, check!

ME MYSELF AND I - DE LA SOUL

Hip hop's feel good pioneers will have you whistling while you work... out all day long. And yes, I know my jokes are especially bad today.

VIVRANT THING - Q-TIP

A member of legendary group A Tribe Called Quest, Q-Tip left the group in the late 90s to make an album that was both profound AND danceable - this right here is the best cut.

WORKOUT PLAN - KANYE WEST

Sir Caps Lock inspires you to work out by talking about, you guessed it, working out. Mister West recorded this track before discovering his newest favourite way to sweat - exercising his Twitter finger.

A MILLI - LIL WAYNE

You'd think someone repeating "A Milli" like, a milli times (I warned you about the bad jokes!) would be annoying - but magically, it's turbo awesome instead. Let's hope they've given him at least a key-tar in prison.

GONE TIL' NOVEMBER REMIX - WYCLEF JEAN FEATURING R. KELLY

It's hard to pick one Wyclef song that gets the party started (the whole Carnival album is rippin', for example) - but this jam gets the nod for one very important reason: my top dog KELS. You can trash R. Kelly all you want, but you can't deny that if he invited you to a white-themed boat cruise with a champagne shot luge you'd be there faster than Carl Lewis to a finish line (for reference, check the video for "Step In The Name Of Love"). Braid. My. Hair.

APACHE - SUGARHILL GANG

While Rapper's Delight gets all the love, Sugarhill Gang's "Apache" is my favorite. The harmony sounds like a leftover disco hook that was discarded when punk tookover - and while that doesn't explain their jheri curls, it does explain the sweet funk beat.

HERE I AM - RICK ROSS FEATURING AVERY STORM AND NELLY

It's a good thing we don't use records anymore - because this track is so addictive that it would have worn a groove in the disc in no time. It also provides a neat solution for those of us who front that we don't like Nelly but secretly put "Batter Up" on repeat. Don't judge me!

ALLURE - JAY-Z

It's hard to pick one Jay-Z song and put it on a list - this is simply my personal fave. With what is arguably the deepest discography in hip hop, composed of club anthems, quirky b-sides and collaborations with artists from all genres of music, Jay-Z has successfully traversed the gangster rap/underground-intelligencia hip hop scenes without succumbing to any stereotypes. Proof of his coolness: Little Orphan Annie was sung sans irony by gang-bangers when "Hard-Knock Life" came out. Amazeballs.

Summer is here and the opportunities to exercise and enjoy the outdoors are greater than ever. Here are some tunes old and new for you to sweat to - because let's face it, you're probably glistening whether you're exercising or not! To listen and purchase these songs, simply click on the artist name/song title and you'll be cranking the tunes in no time.

KYLIE MINOGUE - ALL THE LOVERS

The divine Miss Minogue is back with an album reminiscent of her work from earlier this decade - swirly and girly pop with enough bass and quirkiness to keep things from going sickly sweet.

THE TEMPER TRAP - SWEET DISPOSTION

Are you enjoying the World Cup as much as the rest of the world has? Get in on the action with the song on the tournament - this inspiring little gem would be perfect on a sunrise jog. Cough cough GO SPAIN! cough. This tickle in my throat, I tell ya...

LATRYX - LADY DON'T TEK NO

When everyone else was singing about guns and gangs in the early nineties, these dudes were busy being the chillest cats in town, talking about pretty ladies and what they should wear to the beach that day. Warning: this song might make you feel cool. Just saying.

METRIC - HELP ME I'M ALIVE

This Canadian band has been making the music festival rounds for years now, building a loyal cult following in the process. The lead singer, Emily Haines, has managed to perfect the art of sounding simultaneously bored and animated. I was confused by it at first - and then I noticed that they made every playlist I made for two years. Moral of the story: there isn't one. Moving on...

JOE BUDDEN - PUMP IT UP

Mozart, Puccini.....Budden. This is quite possibly the most inexplicably awesome song in the history of music. Don't try and question it's powers - p-pump it up!

SCISSOR SISTERS - INVISIBLE LIGHT

The Sisters even admitted themselves that the didn't like their last album. Jake Shears, Ana Matronic & company's newest foray into the world of uber-eccentric Elton John inspired glam-rock is a winner though - and if you wanna take your Momma out to this, she'd better be wearing spike heels and extensions.

M.I.A. - SUNSHOWERS

Whether you love her or hate her, M.I.A. has been making some of the most consistently interesting music of the last decade. This little gem from her debut album is my favorite.

THE XX - BASIC SPACE

These Brits name Aaliyah and The Cure as their musical influences. I don't hear it in their songs whatsoever - but I do hear alot of radicalness. Check it.

T-SPOON - SEX ON THE BEACH

I make no apologies for this whatsoever: I love 90's pop-reggae and I don't care who hears me. This song might bring back memories from that one night at that all-inclusive from your college days - or it might just make you think of euro-cut jeans and taupe lipstick. Arrrr-iba!

DRAKE FEATURING JAY-Z - LIGHT UP

It happens every year - one album gets a stranglehold on the summer, from the clubs to the radio stations to the cars cruising the strip. This is it - and luckily, it doesn't suck. Far from it.

NEON INDIAN - DEADBEAT SUMMER

If someone asked me who the kookiest band was in current music, it would a tough decision between these dudes and MGMT. Luckily, their brand of crazy makes for some seriously interesting music - and it gets better with every listen, too.

NEIL DIAMOND - CHERRY CHERRY

If this song can't get you in a good mood, then I don't know how to help you.

JUNIOR SENIOR - MOVE YOUR FEET

These Danish dudes make the most hilarious, silly, danceable stuff out there. This will get you lunging in your underwear when you're brushing your teeth getting ready for work.

CHROMEO - MOMMA'S BOY

Their electro dance hits get all the attention, but this little ditty by Chromeo is the cutest.

FLORENCE AND THE MACHINE - YOU'VE GOT THE LOVE

If you are new to these guys, check this song out to see what all the buzz is about. Florence's heavenly voice and the heartfelt lyrics might be just the push you need on that last mile to cheer you on.

REAL LIFE - SEND ME AN ANGEL

You wanna win at the office karaoke contest? Throw this on and start fist-pumping - you'll have a blue ribbon in no time...and probably a Fan Club. No biggie.

Our design team has heard the desire for a cozy, lightweight summer jacket from our guests online loud and clear. With summer on deck, and morning yoga and beach bonfires in mind, we're spoiling you with the coziness of our own blend of cotton French Terry in the Wear With All Jacket.

The Wear With All Jacket is an extra long and lighter alternative to our classic Remix lulu Hoodie. Our designers wanted to thank you for your continued feedback, and have thus released the Wear With All jacket in Alarming/Vancouver and Bold Blue/Lagoon exclusively online.

summer loving in french terry!

Whether you're traveling or enjoying the season by recommitting to your yoga practice this summer, you want to stay comfortable, and the Wear With All Jacket was made with all of those thoughts and desires in mind. Your skin will surely take a savasana in the comfort of French Terry while waiting for your flight. Summer yoga retreat anyone?

Stretch French Terry is the fancy name for our cotton and Lycra fabric. Cotton is breathable and comfortable and the Lycra prevents the garment from bagging out. It is also pre-shrunk, so there's no need to be afraid to wear the jacket true to size.

Details from left to right: stretch cotton French Terry that won't bag out, zipper garage to protect your chin and the zipper won't buckle, flat seamed comfort and chafe free.

The longer length of this jacket is perfect for before and after yoga to cover up your bum. The jacket is comfortably fitted, and most women are the same size in the Wear With All Jacket as they are the Remix lulu Hoodie. We added our beloved thumbholes to keep your sleeves in place, but it also adds a level of comfort and delight.

Details from left to right: longer length to cover your bum, front pockets for cozy hands, and thumbholes!

Why We Made This:

The perfect long jacket to pair with tights, and yes it covers your entire bum!

Our own blend of cotton French Terry has stretch so it won’t bag out!

Front pockets to keep your hands cozy.

Thumbholes to keep sleeves in place.

Chafe resistant flat seams.

Preshrunk so there are no surprises when you wash me and the zipper won’t buckle!

Whether you're taking the summer head on with a packed itinerary of travel, or exploring the yoga studios and other ways to sweat, the Wear With All Jacket will go along for the ride to keep you comfy. We wish you happy travels and lots of "me time" this summer. Namaste.

Summer is finally here - do you need some new bright & shiny tunes to match the sunny weather? Well look no further - here are 13 tracks infused with virtual Vitamin D for your ears.

HOME – EDWARD SHARPE AND THE MAGNETIC ZEROS
Start your morning with some yoga on your patio and play this in the background. Seriously happy music that you will hum happily for the rest of your day!

DANCING ON MY OWN – ROBYN
I know what your thinking - is this the same Robyn that is on all my dust-covered 90's compilation pop CD's? To answer your question - it sure is, but Robyn has zoomed into the 21st Century with some music dancy enough to give Kylie Minogue a run for her money. Plus she has cool hair - that counts for something, doesn't it?

MAN IN A SUITCASE - THE POLICE
Sting and company have never sounded more stoked than on this forgotten gem. You'll swear there is sun shining out of your stereo!

BIRDS - CRYSTAL CASTLES
Alice Glass and company are back with an album that will be ruling the airwaves all summer. Fantastic tunes if you like electro that is a little off-kilter and imaginative.

TENDERONI – KELE
No, this isn't a cover version of the hit Chromeo song; this is the brand spankin' new first single off of Kele's new album. Who's Kele, you may ask? No big deal - just the lead singer of a little group called Bloc Party. Oh, and he decided to make a dance record. Booiiiinnnggg!!!

AMERICAN DREAM - CROSBY, STILLS, NASH AND YOUNG
Are you good at whistling? Can you whistle and smile at the same time? This song will put you to the test! A good old fashioned summer tune for that slow-pitch or beach volleyball playlist.

SONG FOR THE BABY - KELIS
Kelis has had a busy year. First she broke up with Nas, then she raided Grace Jone's tickle trunk for an aggressive game of dress-up, and now she has teamed up with superstar French producer/DJ David Guetta for an album filled with whimsical vocals and thumping beats.

WHITE LINES (DON'T DO IT) - GRANDMASTER FLASH
It's easy to see why all the young guns sample the hip hop classic tracks - they're unbelievably catchy! This song is amazing for intervals - hilarious lyrics and a wicked ascending chorus will make you forget about the pain. Well, kind of.

EASY LOVE - MSTRKRFT
An electro classic from the legendary Canadian duo. If you haven't checked them out yet, prepare for the obsession.

RÖYKSOPP - WHAT ELSE IS THERE? (THIN WHITE DUKE REMIX)
Yeah yeah yeah - it's been in a billion car commercials. Who cares - this early 2000's dance floor staple is a serious a sweat inducer.

LET'S DANCE - DAVID BOWIE
"When you say run, I run with you." Dude, DAVID BOWIE is running with you!

INFINITE ARMS - BAND OF HORSES
This song is plain and simple one of the prettiest tracks in recent memory. Run to your favorite beach and press play when your toes hit the sand - you'll reward yourself with a supremely serene cool-down.

WALKING ON SUNSHINE - KATRINA AND THE WAVES
The classic summertime jam-jam for dancing around and singing in the mirror post-shower with a towel on your head and your toothpaste as your microphone.

Do you have any suggestions for the next playlist? Leave Alexis a comment below.

I was born in February but with a serious summer baby complex. Since I can't get to summer (or make it summer), I'm going to bring summer to me! How will I do this? By plastering my body with my all time favorite color: Antidote from last spring/summer season. I swear it has happy properties because I am in the best mood when I wear it.

This season my favourite colour has to be Faded Zap. I call it my "insta-tan" because it makes my skin look all glowy and sunkissed, all without the harmful effects of heading into a tanning bed. It also makes the people around me glow.

I also think it's a "safe" color. I mean, if I can be seen a mile away, that has to count towards something right?

I must've licked too many highlighters as a child.

What colors invoke your favorite season?

I just returned from a week-long vacation on the west coast. Relaxing? Of course. Interesting? Always. Hot? Definitely! How convenient that I was escaping the rarity of rain in Toronto to be greeted by record-breaking heat in Vancouver and Seattle.

While I had no problem leaving my email and work behind, I found it difficult to keep up my usual fitness regimen on the road. By the end of the week, my total number of workouts equaled zero and I was tallying one meal per waking hour. The only sweat I was breaking was from the spicy French food I had for dinner in Seattle.

After being back home for a few days, I quickly fell back into my routine of yoga, spin & weights. I had no problems getting into the groove and my body actually felt stronger than ever. Could I attribute my newfound strength to my vacation?

I gloated to my boyfriend about my new insight, on how basking in the hot Vancouver sun built my muscle strength, just as well as any hour long spin class. He laughed. “Are you kidding me? We were sweating once a day. At least!”

How did I manage to break a sweat every day of my vacation without once hitting the gym or getting to my yoga mat? I ran after cabs, walked up miles of steep hills, danced like a maniac at a wedding, and even managed to fit in a quick stretch while waiting to cross the border. I guess you can find a decent workout anywhere in the world without even realizing it!

With summer at its end, plenty of last minute vacations are to be had. How do you manage to “sweat once a day” during your time off?
