How SoHo turned lemons into lemonade.

At lululemon SoHo, in times of adversity it seemed like the "lemon" in lululemon was smothered with mold and damp clothes and a pipe bursting on the third floor of our building. But that lemon has resurfaced and is being squeezed of all its yummy juices. After re-opening a few weeks ago I think it is fair to say that with the help of an amazing team, we have made some top-notch lemonade.

It began with rebuilding the store from just a slat-wall skeleton and morphed into a beautiful, rich space: full of bright chi and swelling enthusiasm. Team SoHo, although not fine-tuned in the art of construction, most certainly is in the art of fitness. Our re-opening celebration began with a four-day fitness blitz (16 classes total) where we reconnected with our neighboring studios. We learned how to throw a mean punch in kickboxing, played with our equilibrium in an inversions yoga class, and collectively groaned as we rapidly pumped our fists in the Pilates 100’s. Our overwhelming sense of accomplishment and inner and collective strength beamed out from the top of our heads and smothered any feelings of doubt we had about making it through our fitness marathon!

At the end of the day we dragged ourselves home, and although sweaty and fatigued, we were all so grateful to have had this unifying experience. It takes a strong-willed team and positive energy to turn a challenging experience into a deeply fulfilling one. Our blitz provided us with the platform to go back into our space in SoHo and rally with our superstar helpers to create a kick-ass store. We now have cultivated the environment to provide an unforgettable guest experience, with the best product, hands on knowledge and some very tasty lemonade, I might add.

Ps, a huge thank you to Summer Starling who took the above pictures!

How a song and the support of your friends and family can help you finish your race.

Above: The Yorkdale lululemon team is ready to race!

I ran my first race of the season earlier this month with ten of my most energetic lululemon colleagues. The first of many group adventures this summer, we were pumped to run as a team.

We met in the early sunshine at our friendly sister lululemon location for a quick morning stretch with one of our community's personal trainers, Lina DiFelice. The store manager pumped up the tunes and runners started trickling in to see what the music was for. They spotted yoga mats, Silverescent shirts, water coolers, and orange slices. Ahhh food. And a clean public washroom! There couldn't be a prettier sight before a race.

Seeing a few familiar faces through the store's window calmed the butterflies in my stomach. A few people from university, some from the gym, even one of my friend's parents! But none were more comforting than the faces of my teammates. Some of us were running for personal bests, some of us were running for fun, and a few of us were walking to support the cause.

The race began shortly after the stretch was completed. With earphones on and little nervous smiles to each other, we were off. As my team dispersed through the crowd, we knew that we'd meet each other at the "bananas and bagels" station.

I'm not going to lie - I stopped a few times during the race.

Led Zeppelin’s "Whole Lotta Love" and two of my teammates hot on my heels was all the motivation I needed to sprint to the end.

1 hour 2 minutes 6 seconds - personal best!

Shaky legs and all, we found each other with big hugs and medals around our necks. It doesn't get better than this: a sunny day in your hometown, 12,000+ people, and laughter and smiles all around. We did it!

Congratulations team lululemon chicken second serving! Can't wait for the next challenge!

A dance movement that is taking back public space!

If dancers are sighted in an unusual public space, moving seamlessly, you may have stumbled across a site-specific dance project. Innovative choreographers are ditching the stage and going public by choreographing movement in and around public spaces. With the current credit crunch, creating movement in public space is a win win situation as more people are exposed to dance and no one has to worry about paying for a theatre.

I am spearheading a site-specific dance project inside our store at Grant Ave in San Francisco. The show premieres June 5 and 6 and utilizes the stores' front space, window and sidewalk. I enrolled floor manager Chris Cano and local dancer Kristin Cheng to choreograph, as well as our very own educator Anna Carnes to dance. Performing also will be Cameron Growden and Mayuko Ayabe. The goal of this project is to get our feet wet as artists and for our store to move, touch and inspire the community.

Making dance in public spaces has great possibilities. The movement is made in relation to the environment, it is intimate and we get a super work out on the pavement. Not to mention curious crowds watching as we rehearse inside and outside of the store. I am seeing that there does not have to be an announced time and place for dance to be appreciated and seen.

Site-based dance is also happening in Philadelphia where choreographer Kate Watson-Wallace is creating site-based performances that re-imagine everyday spaces such as cars, living rooms and bathrooms. In fact, one of her dancers, Alexandra Holmes, is an ambassador for the lululemon Walnut Street store.

Keep your eyes peeled for random acts of dance in your neighborhood as the epidemic spreads.
