tips for staying motivated

"I surround myself with a community of goal setters. This makes it easier to bring my goals into our day-to-day conversations, meaning I already have a clear vision of what my future looks like just by talking about it often." - Carolyn

"The energy you give out is the energy you receive in return. Everyday I know that I am the one that is responsible for making my energy a great one. Setting goals keeps me motivated and excited for what’s to come which breeds some amazing energy for all." - Laurie

"I share my goals with anyone and everyone. Bringing them up in conversation keeps them in the front of my mind and enrolls those around me to keep me on track." - Katie

Meet Matt! When not spinning on his bike, he's creating a pipeline of greater leaders here at lululemon through his role as Leadership Trainer!

what is one of your biggest passions?

Being in front of a crowd. Be it hosting an event, performing on stage, leading a workshop, or kicking some quads in my spin class - I just love giving energy to an audience. It totally makes me come alive and refreshes me after a long day. The world is a stage and I love being on it, baby!

what is a goal you achieved that you're proud of?

In my first year at UBC, I tried out for the UBC Rowing Team having never rowed before. To give you some context, UBC's rowing program has sent 73 participants to the Olympics and has brought home over 40 Olympic medals. I was playing with the big boys to say the least. Morning try-outs and practices consisted of running the Wreck Beach stairs (3 times) as part of a morning run, ERG tests, and rowing in freezing cold water until your hands grew tough enough to take it. After our first, and possibly last, novice regatta, the list of who would be joining the team that year got posted on the side of a shed. I can vividly remember walking up to that shed and scrolling my finger down the list of names. Number 23: Matt Corker. That was the start of my three year rowing career and some of the best memories (and life lessons) I've ever had.

what gets you up in the morning?

Jason Mraz. My love of this man's music and outlook on life is not a secret by any stretch of the imagination. For the past 3 years, my CD-alarm clock has woke me up by blaring his tunes. I have a little dance party in my bed before I even get up in the morning. It's great!

what is your favourite way to sweat?

Right now, I am on a spin class kick. I started teaching spin classes earlier this summer and now get my sweat on on the bike three times a week. That being said, I enjoy a good hot yoga class to balance out my routine (Moksha, Bikram, or YHot). I'm also training to run the BMO Vancouver Marathon in 4 hours - so check back with me in May to see how that went!

what does your role elevate lululemon?

I have the privilege of getting all our new hires excited about and ready for their roles at lululemon. You could consider me the Director of First Impressions for the Store Support Centre. I lead our on-boarding training and help deliver other development opportunities for them as well. When I'm not working with the new faces, I work with our managers who have been with us less than a year to provide them with the skills and resources to be the best manager (and person) they can be. In short, I help great people achieve their goals and live a life they LOVE!! (It's pretty much the best job ever.)

That was Matt in whirlwind! Find out more about the life he is loving to live here at his blog http://www.thatsacorker.com/

Sheena with the BHAG she shared in June. Read on for an update!

Setting big, hairy, audacious goals (BHAGs) are exciting. They make us dream of what is possible and then push us to achieve it. In June 2010, we asked some rockstar lululemon athletica employees to set (and write down) some BHAGs. As with any other goal, it’s a good idea to review your BHAGs on a regular basis. Sheena sat down with Matt, a member of our Leadership & Development team, to review her BHAG – let’s listen in:

Matt: Your BHAG of speaking fluent Italian, Spanish, and French by Oct 2014 is awesome! Tell me about your vision that this supports.

Sheena: Well, in 10 years, by Jan 2020, I will be the Director of International Business at lululemon athletica. I also want to set the intention of being able to connect and speak with our guests, ambassadors, and store neighbours directly to really build those authentic relationships – rather than having a translator.

Matt: Sounds like this BHAG is really aligned to your other goals. Was this your first time looking at your BHAG after you wrote it down?

Sheena: Actually no. I reviewed it earlier and wanted to take being fluent in Italian out because I knew it would be really hard. But BHAGs are intended to be hard and push you, so I just had to prioritize how I was going to tackle it.

Matt: So what’s your plan? How are you going to tackle this bad boy?

Sheena: I am going to master Spanish first, then take on French, and then Italian.

Matt: It’s good to start with something that helps build confidence in your ability to accomplish your BHAG. And by the time you hit Italian, you’ll be only one language away! Your goal will be so close to being accomplished! But, before we get too ahead of ourselves, how to plan on mastering Spanish?

Sheena: Believe it or not, I just registered for Spanish lessons at Point Grey Community Centre. I am doing the classes with a friend as well, so we can hold each other accountable.

Matt: Having someone to hold you accountable to your goals is key. To help you really understand the language, you may also consider teaching it to someone else. That could look like quizzing your friend before and after class, or teaching your colleagues a new word each week. Either of those can really help solidify your learning and help enroll others in supporting your goal.

Sheena: Does that mean you are ready to learn some Spanish then?

Matt: Si!

*high five*

Here's Ali with the BHAG she shared with us in June. Read on for an update...

Ali sat down with Matt, a member of our Leadership & Development team, to review her BHAG – let’s listen in:

Matt: Tell me about your BHAG.

Ali: Well, it’s changed. I originally set it as owning an online eco-friendly urban gift basket store by January 2015. But when I knew we were meeting, I reviewed and changed it.

Matt: That’s perfect. Goals should always be reviewed and modified. So what is it now?

Ali: I will be a professional wrapper and own a wrapping business by January 2015. I will be the one to go to that is able to wrap anything. You want me to wrap up a car for you? I can do that!

Matt: So why the change? Is it more in line with your vision of where you’d like to be in 10 years?

Ali: I changed it because, when I was reviewing the goal, I realized what I really love to do is the wrapping of the gift baskets – not creating the mix of the consumable products in the basket itself. And it would still have an eco-friendly, philanthropic twist to it, obviously. This is also still in line with my vision. In five years I will start the business, and in 10 years I want to be a stay at home mom with the business on the side.

Matt: That’s great to hear the goal is still aligned to your 10 year vision and your true passion. When you revisit your goal and it doesn’t inspire you – you know it’s time to change it. So – what are you going to do next to help you achieve this goal?

Ali: I want to start small to test out the demand and my own capacity. I’m going to offer my great wrapping services to my colleagues during Christmas through our company newsletter – helping them to wrap Christmas and Secret Santa presents.

Matt: Nice! Let’s follow-up after Christmas to see if that experience helped reaffirm your BHAG or if it highlighted what may need to be altered.

*high five*

Do you have a question around goal-setting that you'd like some guidance on? Meet our newest blog artist, Matt from our Saskatoon store! He recently achieved his Big Hairy Audacious Goal of becoming a blogger for our team!

"Which road should I take?" (Alice)

"Where do you want to go?" (Cat)

"I don't know," Alice answered.

"Then", said the Cat, "It doesn't matter. If you don't know where you are going, any road will get you there."

- Alice's Adventures in Wonderland

How true. The path to self development is often as winding and unpredictable as Alice's journey through Wonderland. Just this year I set out on a similar adventure: What is my Big Hairy Audacious Goal?

Who knew that these little statements of "I will…" would became so powerful and life-changing once they hit the paper… As soon as I wrote my goals out I began working harder at the things that I loved, and am passionate about. In sequence, I got closer and closer to achieving the things that I wanted to achieve! For example: this year I set out to decide to really "jump in" to writing, and more frightening, having my writing read and shared by many different people. Once I put "I will join the lululemon blog team" on paper, it was all i wanted to make happen. I began looking at what I could do to qualify, finally leading into applying through email. I worked to make it happen, and it did, and it can happen to you right now.

I encourage you out there (at least I hope you're out there ) to take the time today, sit down with a good coffee and think of a goal you want to accomplish this week. Maybe its finishing your 5K strong or just polishing off that paper you were procrastinating on. Meeting goals feels AWESOME, so why not? Dare to step out on a ledge today and you might just find out that your ledge wasn’t as tall as you thought it was!

Feel free to comment below with your goals and successes!
