The days and weeks are going lighting fast – only 85 days until SeaWheeze 2013!

We can’t wait to yoga, run and party through Vancouver’s beaches, mountains and city streets with you again this summer. Last year, we created an app to help you with all things half-marathon related: training, a city guide to help you maximize your weekend in Vancity, run playlists and more. We listened to your feedback that you loved the app and that you wanted even more features added for this year’s event.

Drumroll please…

Please meet our brand new SeaWheeze app! We have added a ton of cool stuff designed to make your SeaWheeze 2013 experience as good as, oh, I don’t know, eating Oreo ice cream and getting a foot massage at the same time (*Editor’s Note: Alexis’ creepy idea of a good time does not reflect the views of this blog or 99% of the human population).

Let’s get into the nitty gritty of what features have been added to the app.

makeover alert: my training section

We heard you say that you wanted to track your progress up to the big day. Now you can check the boxes of which runs, yoga and cross-training you've completed per week and the app will compile your progress for you.

We’ve also added new training videos featuring this year's SeaWheeze trainers (runners Jenn Howard-Brown, Chris McClung and Blue Benadum and yogi Kerri Kelly) so you can get instruction on-the-go.

let’s get physical accountable

You can now share and interact with friends on Facebook who are also training – you can see their progress and they can see yours.

Things just got serious.

say cheese!

There's a Photo Booth with different frames so that you can share all your SeaWheeze memories with friends on Facebook, Twitter and more. There’s also a live Instagram feed of anything hashtagged #SeaWheeze so you can keep up with all the yoga.run.party times happening during the weekend!

get down on it

Playlists are now listed in the main navigation for easy reference.

My apologies in advance for multiple Mariah tracks...I was surrounded by butterflies and wearing denim cutoffs when I put them together. #notreallysorry

live goal crushing

We will now be publishing live finishing times via the app on race day. These will still also be offered via desktop and tablet. Get those goals!

it’s the freakin’ weekend

Weekend events are now broken out by day to make weekend planning easy breezy.

We are counting down the days until August 10th! This app is available in the App Store as of May 17th. What part of the SeaWheeze weekend are you most excited for?

Yup, it’s that time again. Last year we decided to throw a badass half-marathon party on the streets, seawalls and beaches of Vancouver and it was such a success that we’re taking it to the next level this year.

We are thrilled to announce that registration for SeaWheeze 2013 goes live tomorrow, Friday January 18th at 9am.

Were you at SeaWheeze 2012? If not, watch this video to get a little feel for the race.

what's this half-marathon all about?

Like last year, there will be crazy cheer stations (hello, drag queens!), tunes pumping through the course, a runner’s lounge and a SeaWheeze store. We’ll have yoga throughout the weekend offered to keep you limbered and relaxed – after all, this is the summer time and we want you to feel awesome. Last but certainly not least, we will be having another concert after the race this year – details are top secret for now (any guesses?!) but we promise it’ll be something you’ll never forget. Check out this page for more information on all things SeaWheeze.

We’ll also have a training program to help you achieve your running goals. Wanna get your personal best down by five minutes? Want to finish your first half? Whatever your goals are, we’ll have a program to help you get there.

So are you in? We hope so…this year we’re taking it to another level and we want to celebrate with you.

Register here – we’ll see you at the start line on August 10!

When faced with an injury halfway through training for her first race, Robson Store educator, Cayley, made the decision to listen to her body and be a stand for the 7500 other runners who would need her support that day.

sign me up!

When I first heard about the SeaWheeze, I just knew it was something I had to be a part of. I’d never been a runner before but if there was one race out there to inspire me to lace up my shoes and hit the trails, it was this one. I signed up without really thinking about what I was committing myself to (21.1 is about 16 more kilometers than I’d ever run before) but I had caught a serious case of FOMO (fear of missing out) and there seemed to be only one cure.

Of course, after hitting that “register” button, I had all the reasons not to run, catch up to me – I’d never been in a race before (read: I’d never run regularly before at all) and I had no idea how to train for a half marathon. Lucky for me, I was invited to be a part of a special training group with Mike Porter, one of our amazing ambassadors at the Robson store. For three months, each of the five runners in the group would be receiving a weekly training program tailored to their run experience and their goals, as well as coaching, advice and support from Mike.

from 0 to 21.1 12k

I hit my training hard and fast; within just a few weeks I was running distances that I had never thought were possible for me. When I finished my first ever 12km run, I had such a sense of pride and accomplishment. After that moment, heading out for my runs was no longer a chore. So when I started to get a sharp pain in my left knee on one of my runs I started to get a little worried – running was something I had just started to enjoy and I wasn’t ready to give it up yet.

bottom line: listen to your body

When I told Mike about what I was feeling, the support I got from him was incredible. He sent me videos of exercises to try, kept me accountable to spinning as my cross-training so I didn’t lose fitness and recommended several different clinics for me to visit. Over the month of June, I saw a physiotherapist and a registered massage therapist more regularly than I saw some of my friends but the progress I was making was pretty slow. After a month off of running, I had a tough decision to make – I desperately wanted to run the SeaWheeze (especially after I’d convinced my sister and one of my best friends to run it with me) but I was still feeling that sharp pain in my leg and time to properly train was running out. I held off until the last possible minute but eventually recognized that I needed to give my body the time it needed to heal (which I’m still working on) without the pressure of a deadline.

this is my SeaWheeze

Once I made the decision to not run the SeaWheeze, my FOMO started to flare up again – I didn’t want to miss out on a weekend that I’d been looking forward to since I’d signed up in January. I stayed involved with the race through the Robson store and I was beyond excited to be at the Vancouver Convention Center on August 11th to cheer on the start and finish of the race. Once I had made my tough decision, I channeled my training efforts from running a half marathon to prepping for 7500 enthusiastic high fives.

i’ll runcouver again

I may not have been able to run in the main event this year but I certainly didn’t miss out. I learned a lot from my SeaWheeze experience – what I’m capable of and how to listen to and take care of my body. I know that I accomplished a huge goal by just learning to enjoy heading out for a jog, which is something that I’ll have forever. At the moment I’m focused on getting my knee in a good spot so that I can runcouver my favorite trails again soon. SeaWheeze 2013, here I come!

It takes a lot to recognize when your body needs a break – and even more to overcome your own ego when faced with a setback. We think those who can’t run should cheer (or get involved in the race in some other way). How have you reacted in the past in the face of injury?

Pair a yummy-smelling body spray with dry shampoo and oil-absorbing sheets and you’ll be good to go for patio time after your run. Vanilla Vera Cruz is a perfect summer scent: light, sweet and a little bit sexy.

2. Rocky Mountain Sport Epsom Salts
Once you’ve given your all on the SeaWheeze course and you head back to your home or hotel, treat your tootsies to a little TLC with an Epsom salt bath. Epsom salts are an easy and affordable way to rejuvenate tired feet and legs post-race.

3. Women’s No Show Ultimate Sock
While a big training program is important, having a successful run is ultimately determined by the little things. Fight the battle against blisters with socks that stay put and breathe.

4. Philosophy Purity Facial Cleanser
SeaWheeze weekend is going to be a jam-packed festivus of good times. This cleanser is the MVP of the toiletry bag: it cleanses dirt, sweat and makeup away without stripping your skin and comes in different sizes for easy travel.

5. Energy Gels
Hunger pangs are a sworn enemy of personal bests. Vega products will be on the SeaWheeze course but if you’ve been training with a different brand bring it along (it’s a good idea to try gels once or twice before race day to make sure they suit your tummy).

6. Om Tote
Picking the right bag to pack for a weekend away can make-or-break how simple (or arduous) the task can be. The Om Tote has plenty of storage capacity to fit everything you need and has compartments to keep all your essentials organized.

7. Burt’s Bees Coconut Foot Cream
Your feet have been working hard and they deserve a little VIP treatment. This foot cream is our absolute favourite – it smells delicious, is super-moisturizing and is completely natural.

8. Groovy Thong
Much like socks, wearing the right pair of underwear on your big day is a decision not made lightly. The Groovy Thong is comfy and won’t, ahem, “ride up” so you can stride ahead without a worry.

9. Alba Botanical SPF 25 Lipcare
Many a time we have slathered on sunscreen only to forget about our lips…and let us tell you, it’s a real bummer when the sun goes down. We love Alba’s SPF 25 lipcare; it is moisturizing, a little glossy without being sticky and we have yet to burn our pout with this stuff on.

10. Clean & Clear Oil-Absorbing Sheets
On fast and furious weekend adventures, sometimes we need to get ready in a hurry. In the summertime, these oil-absorbing sheets are a girl’s best friend – post-race, they will save your life.

11. Deja Vu Scarf
Having a scarf to wear on planes, after yoga classes and on drafty summer nights is absolutely key. We love the Déjà Vu Scarf – the cotton is uber-soft and it’s big enough to wrap around twice. An added bonus: bring this scarf to the beach or SeaWheeze concert for a cozy mini-blanket.

12. Klorane Oil-Suppressing Dry Shampoo
Sometimes when patio hour calls we don’t have time to head back and shower post-run. This dry shampoo makes oil disappear without making our hair ashy or grey looking (plus it smells delicious).

13. Bodyglide
Some people are into Bodyglide and some people aren’t….but it can be a nice thing to have in your bag just in case you feel a case of chafing coming on.

13.1 Apothic Red
Red alert: once you’ve come home from your day of SeaWheeze activities, we think it’s critical to toast to your achievements with a glass of full-bodied red. This is our current favourite.

Rob, our SeaWheeze TackleBox trainer and Emma, our expert nutrition partner at Vega, took over our social channels for a one-hour live Q & A. We’ve compiled some of the most valuable questions to help you tackle the SeaWheeze half marathon… 3 weeks and counting!

tips from our experts

Q: Hey Rob - I'm struggling to stop/reduce some shin splints that are beginning in my left lower inner calf - I haven't had shin splints before, any tips for stretches or things to do while I run? – Marena
A: Marena, some quick wins would be to change your runners. Another would be to stretch and roll your calves before and after your run. I would also make sure that before your run, you do a very thorough dynamic warm up. There just happens to be a good one right here. – Rob

Q: How many days before a half marathon do you recommend carb loading? Do you even recommend it at all for just a half? – Alexa
A: The lunch before the race is a crucial meal to get your carb load in so that you still have time to digest it completely. If you have room to eat carb heavy but a smaller portion at dinner, then that works great too! – Emma

Q: I’m never too sure what to eat race day. What’s a good pre-race vegan breakfast? And how much time before the race is good to eat? Thanks – Monica
A: Good vegan breakfasts – We love using gluten-free porridges with berries and almond butter. You could also try a power shake with a plant-based protein (10-15g), banana or frozen mango and extra greens if you like! Consume your last meal 1-2 hours before your run and of course, don’t forget to hydrate. – Emma

Q: Hi Rob, my feet are looking gross from the training runs, ie. blisters but I love my low support shoes… Does that mean they are too small? Or am I still breaking them in? Or wrong socks? I'm reluctant to break in a new pair so close to the race... does skin tape help? Also, why are you so darn good looking - what's your secret? – Carlson
A: Blisters - did you get them when you wore a more supportive shoe? How old are they? What type of socks are you using? Cotton or technical? You have time to buy new runners because of the fact that they are minimal style shoes. I've never used skin tape...does anyone else have input for Carlson? In regards to my stunning good looks, I'd like to think that yoga, running and having great people around me keep me looking fresh *wink* - Rob

Q: Is chocolate milk really the post-run wonder-drink that the ads make them out to be? – Conner
A: Great question! Ideally right after a run, high carbo intake (which chocolate milk has) of either food or drink is good but dairy can be hard to digest. If you want to avoid the dairy you could try a glass of chocolate almond milk! – Emma

Q: Hey Rob, I find that there is a lot of stress on my knees for longer runs, any suggestions on exercises to help strengthen the knees or ways to reduce this stress? Thanks! – Fatima
A: Hey Fatima, great question. Sounds like a little overuse - stretching the quads and rolling them using a foam roller could be a quick win. A little rest could also be all you need. If I were to dig a little deeper, I’d suggest to get a physio to look at your running form as it may be a simple correction of how you run. Let me know how it goes! – Rob

A: Hey Fatima! Natural anti-inflammatories like turmeric & ginger can also support and glucosamine can help nourish soft tissue like joints, ligaments and tendons. – Emma

1. I’m waiting for the rain to stop.
The funny thing is, the rain is waiting for you to start.

2. I still haven’t recovered from that horrific chafing injury.
A healthy coat of Bodyglide in strategic places makes running more fun than a Slip ‘N Slide.

3. I can’t run and be on pinterest at the same time.
Think of it as photo-scouting for your “I love my hometown” board.

4. There is a box of chocolate chip cookies in my cupboard that aren’t going to eat themselves.
Nothing builds an appetite like a long run.

5. Training is for the weak.
That’s true. And by the end of their training they’re strong.

6. I am on the watermelon diet so I am functioning on negative calories.
No-one really functions on negativity.

7. I might get smoking hot and attract too much attention.
Fighting off unwanted admirers is a never-ending task. Being able to outrun them is much more satisfying.

8. I only run if someone’s chasing me.
Find someone else to run with. You can take turns being the chaser.

9. I’ve got to watch Mad Men. I’m obsessed.
I saw Jon Hamm running through your neighbourhood yesterday.

10. I don’t have my gear with me.
If a lion was chasing you, would you stop and tell him that you haven’t got the proper gear? Maybe you just need the right motivation.

11. I don’t have time.
If only we had 24 hours in the day like our grandmothers had when they raised 17 children, cooked dinner, cleaned the house and worked in the hospital ten hours a day, six days a week.

12. My headphones keep falling out.
Try singing instead. It’ll improve your lung capacity and cheer up passers-by.

13. I'm really not in the mood.
Exercise in the morning before your brain figures out what you’re doing.

13.1. I’m lazy.
We'll say. You didn’t even take the time to think of a good excuse.

Now that you haven't got any good excuses left you should probably get out there and run - The SeaWheeze is just 10 weeks away!

With marathon season in full swing, we wanted to take a step back from all the serious personal-best chat and up the ante in true lululemon fashion. Here is what we would consider some of the world’s most unique runs, that is, those that focus on the fun factor first.

top 5 cool runs

round rarotonga road race

September 22-29th 2011
Rarotonga, Cook islands

The Round Rarotonga Road Race is part of a week long running festival that attracts serious run enthusiasts, casual joggers and everyone in between. The white sand beaches and aqua blue lagoons are just icing on the cake when it comes to the main event which is as a 32KM race around the island.

the great gorilla run

Saturday September 28th 2011
London, England

The only thing better than a costume party is a costume run! Grab your best Gorilla suit and join thousands of people during The Great Gorilla Run. It’s a 7K fun run that passing famous London sights such as Tower Bridge and The Tate Modern. No need to worry about a personal best or winning form in this totally bananas effort to help save an endangered species.

disney wine & dine half marathon

Saturday October 1st, 2011
Florida, USA

If you’re looking to shave a few minutes off your time, one of the best places to try to do this is the place where their claim to fame is making dreams come true. Just imagine, Disney world, at night, with a route lined with your favourite characters cheering you on, while a complimentary glass of wine awaits you at the finish line. If the Disney wine and dine half knows how to do one thing right, its giving participants a happily ever after.

reggae marathon

Saturday December 3rd, 2011
Negril, Jamaica

When it comes to the Reggae Marathon, Bob Marley says it best, “One good thing about music, when it hits- you feel no pain.” From the minute the gun fires, this marathon bursts with excitement while the beat of loud reggae music echoes throughout. Veterans of the course agree it’s the perfect race to get lost in the drumming and that the atmosphere is like no other. The biggest draw is its location. Think Marathon, then vacation. That’s definitely a combo we could get used to!

the great wall marathon

Saturday May 19th 2012
China

In the court of fun runs, the jury is out for this one. Just in case a marathon isn’t enough of a challenge, how do you feel about 5164 steps along the way? Okay, The Great Wall Marathon might teeter on the fine line of fun for some people but it was just too cool to leave out. We can only hope that the breathtaking views of Tianjin can distract your mind enough to forget that you are, in fact, running a marathon while climbing stairs. Not to worry though, this one isn’t until May 2012, which should give you plenty of time to train; The CN Tower might be a great place to start!

Now that we’ve got wine drinking, reggae listening gorillas running stair-a-thons around an island, on our mind, we’re thinking it’s about time to start booking those destination races for fall! What other fun runs are on your radar for the upcoming season?

Sometimes you just have to trust that mother knows best. That trust may be hard to find when she wakes you up at the crack of dawn to go running. Since she began running seriously two years ago, Jordan Gardner- the daughter of our uber-fit VP of Global Brand, Deanne - has come to appreciate her mom's early morning ritual. (Apparently Grandma has something to do with it too.)

running together

Until recently, running together wasn't Deanne's and Jordan's forté. When Jordan was 12 years old, Deanne, Jordan and her younger brother ran the Vancouver Sun Run 'together'. "I ran maybe the first kilometre with them, before I took off," says Deanne, "I said, 'okay guys, I can't run at this pace. See you at the end'."

"Saying that Deanne is competitive is like saying that Ryan Reynolds is 'ok looking'."

Now Jordan’s pace is more in step with her mom’s. When she isn’t swamped with school commitments, they run together twice a week through Vancouver’s Endowment Lands. The forest runs give the awesome twosome time to catch up. They chat about everything from their daily lives to their respective goals and what they want to cook for dinner. (They love to cook and bake as much as they love to sweat it off together.)

three generations of go-getters

Deanne learned about the mechanics of running from her mother who is also responsible for her competitive edge. "Compared to normal people I have a little bit of competition," says Jordan, "but not against my mom." (Editor’s note: A cursory glance at their personal bests is all it takes to see how they love to push themselves – and each other. At a recent half marathon, both finished second in their age class. Deanne finished eight minutes before her daughter.) Jordan definitely exhibits her mom's drive, "I want to do a half again and, like, beat her. Eventually." No doubt both women would love to claim Grandma's title. "My mother was a great runner." Deanne says, "her best time was a 1:28 for a half. She was quick."

lessons learned

If Jordan could have one attribute of her mom’s, it would be Deanne's determination. "She’s a pretty determined woman," says Jordan, "She wakes up rain or shine, any weather, and she’ll just go." [case in point: when we caught up with them, they were running in the sleet] "So, you can’t really have an excuse to not do it. It’s always going to feel good. Some days I have to drag myself out there but when it’s done you feel so much better."

How has your mother motivated you and kicked your butt into gear? Or does she still kick your butt?

grapeseed, a colour and so much more

I grew up in Oliver, a little town in the South Okanagan. It’s the “Wine Capital of Canada” and its semi-arid climate produces some of the most incredible wines around. Wine is a part of who I am. My mum has been in the industry for years, and I have friends who are winemakers, sommeliers, tasting bar managers ... the whole wine gamut.

There are few things I love more than sipping a big, bad Meritage or Merlot on the patio at Burrowing Owl in Oliver. Watching the South Okanagan sun set, and feeling the heat of the desert disappear into night is an event that everyone should experience once in their lifetime.

1/2 corked marathon

One of my favourite wine experiences takes place in Oliver every year – it’s called the “1/2 Corked Marathon”. (It's so good that this year's event sold out in less than 48 hours.) Basically, you run about 20km through the vineyards of the Okanagan, sampling wine at wineries along the way. Could anything be more heavenly? Wine + cardio + costumes = my happy place!

personal rituals

favourite wine

Stoneboat 2007 Pinot Noir. Violet, cherry, berry ... it’s a truly delicate and classic pinot noir. I catch myself having dreams about it.

Cave de lugny - Cremant de bourgone it's pink, it's bubbly, crisp and refreshing; everything you should look for in a bubble.

One of my favourite things about drinking wine, aside from the drinking of course, is the opening of the cork and capsule. Wax? Metal? Plastic? Cork? The feeling of opening the bottle tells a story unto itself!

What the winemaker hopes you’ll experience when settling into that next bottle goes far beyond the wine: bottle weight, ease of opening, texture of the label. They all matter and they all craft part of the story but for me the cork and capsule experience is the "lives happily ever after."

If you could visit any wine region in the world, where would you go? Napa? Tuscany? Bourdeaux?
