				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I lived in Italy a few years ago, and the one thing I was truly blown away by was the beautiful women. But their beauty was emanating from a different place than their appearance; their beauty was carried in the way they walked, laughed and enjoyed themselves. It's not that Italians are skinnier and healthier than the American women I am used to seeing daily; they simply love and celebrate their bodies regardless of their shape and radiate confidence because of it.</p>

<p>On the beach of Monterosso, skinny to large Italian women walked in a way that truly took my breath away. Everyone looked amazing and I was truly envious of them. They knew how to love their bodies and I didn't, and it was showing. My self consciousness may as well have been an extra 50 pounds of chub, because it was definitely weighing me down and I decided to drop it on that beach. Coming home from Italy, I started to walk like an Italian for a while. Shoulders back, head up and proud of my body.</p>

<h1>why don't we love our bodies as much as they do in europe?</h1>
<p>As I write this post today I am reminded that my Italian walk has slipped away a bit, and I want to know why and how to bring it back. I have been asking people around lululemon a few questions about loving their bodies. I wasn't shocked by their answers, but I want to find a way to put an Italian sway in their days. Here is what I found:</p>

<p>Hollis, a runner and dream maker, and in the eyes of most women has a perfect body.</p>
<h2>Do you love your body?</h2>
<p>Most days.</p>
<h2>How do you find the love in your body on the days it seems to be lacking?</h2>
<p>Exercise or run or cycling when I can't find the love and I am reminded of how strong my thighs are because that's the body part that I hate the most. My thighs give me strength in a conflicting way.</p>

<p>Dane walks tall, works out a lot, and in the eyes of most women, is pretty smokin'.</p>
<h2>Do you love your body?</h2>
<p>No. I haven't in the past and I'm starting to.</p>
<h2>How do you find the love in your body on the days it seems to be lacking?</h2>
<p>I beat myself up mentally and then feel better by exercising. Sculpt yoga classes make me feel the best about my body, and when I need the love, I go to class.</p>

<p>Finally, there's Natalia. Natalia is beautiful inside and out, and seems to have it all figured out. When I met her a few weeks ago, I was blown away by her internal beauty and was instantly reminded of the Italian women I so admire. She is an <a href="http://www.satilife.com/" target="_blank">IntenSati</a> instructor and is trying to teach the world how to love themselves through exercise.</p>
<h2>Have you always loved your body?</h2>
<p>Absolutely not! It wasn't until my teen years when I found exercise that I began to appreciate my body and enjoyed being physical. I can honestly say that I now love my body. IntenSati has a lot to do with that, it reminds me that the point of exercising is not to fit into a pair of jeans, but to feel strong, healthy and confident.</p>
<h2>What tips and mantras can you share with those of us who are still working on loving our bodies?</h2>
<p>Find a type of exercise that you enjoy. If you feel that exercise is torture or punishment, chances are you will not stick with your routine and that you will feel resentful and angry, neither of which are emotions that cultivate self-love. Of course it should be challenging, but if you hate running or swimming, I would not start by committing to run or swim every day! Try lots of classes and find one you love.</p>
<p>One affirmation I think is really powerful is; <em>I love myself exactly as I am</em>. This helps remind me that even as I am striving to be stronger and more fit, I must begin from a foundation of love for myself just as I am in the present moment. After all, love is always a more powerful fuel than self doubt.</p>
<h1>walk like an italian, sweat like a north american, and love your body</h1>
<p>In the end what I found was that we North Americans may not show that we love our bodies in the way that we walk and talk, but we definitely love our bodies in the ways we sweat. Now if we can just put a bit more of an Italian bounce in our step, we might be able to convince ourselves and the world of the love we have for our bodies. When you are not feeling the love, find a way to sweat and fake it until you make it. Life's too short and you only get one body, so love it up. <em>Namaste</em>.</p>

<p>Call me a skeptic, but I find it a bit silly to be slithering around like a snake on the gym floor reciting "ahhhhh, sexy spine" out loud.</p>
<p>It was my first Nia class and I had trouble keeping a straight face. I couldn't make eye contact with my fellow <a href="/honolulu">lululemon Ala Moana</a> educators for fear of cracking up as we danced barefoot, twisting our spines and awkwardly flailing our arms in the air.</p>
<p>Nia, which stands for Neuromuscular Integrative Actions, is described as a body-mind fitness and lifestyle program. Students kick off their shoes as they incorporate movement and philosophies from dance, yoga, pilates, martial arts, and more – moving their way to a healthier and more empowered mind, body and soul.</p>
<p>During the class, as I willed myself to keep an open mind and allow my body to relax, I watched the teacher let loose and encourage her students to do the same. People around me were spontaneously spinning, singing, clapping, and even releasing shouts of "yes!" I also noticed that no one could stop smiling as we danced around the room. That freedom made me shun my self-consciousness and I started to shake and shimmy to the music.</p>
<p>I think my change of heart came after noticing I was surrounded by women of all ages who were fully aware of their bodies, with no hesitation to express their grace and power. It was a place that gave me a sense of freedom, pushing me to become more energized, strong, and confident.</p>
<p>I'm convinced that Nia is a fun stress-buster, as well as a joyful way to get in shape, become more in tune with your body, and even find happiness while sweating it out. <p>Rest, relax, recover and revel in your accomplishment! You have trained hard for the past four months, so it's time to let your body repair. This is often hard for many runners, as a marathon brings not only peak physical fitness, but a phenomenon called "runner's high," which makes you feel so good after a run that you can’t wait to run again.</p>
<p>Along with all of these wonderful feelings, post-marathon can also bring about feelings of depression. A lululemon run club guest recently came to me a couple of weeks after her first marathon and told me that she was feeling depressed. She asked if it was crazy to feel that way. The answer? Not at all. Post-marathon depression is very real and is often accompanied by a sense of loss. You spend four months training, you structure much of your life around your training, you look forward to race day, and then in a matter of hours, it is done.</p>
<p>Rest is vital. Your body needs a few weeks to repair itself and recover before you begin your next training cycle.</p>
<h2>a game plan</h2>
<p>For me, I set out a post-marathon game plan. This season, my race is the Philadelphia Marathon. After the marathon, I am taking five weeks off from hard training to allow my body to repair and recover. Besides lululemon run club, I will not be running, but will be replacing my hard runs with yoga classes, core work, and strength training to let my body recover and to lay a foundation for my next training cycle. In terms of beating post-marathon blues, I always host and cook Thanksgiving dinner (this year for 14) to give me something immediate to look forward to and focus on once my fall racing season is over.</p>
<h2>after you cross the finish line</h2>
<p>Once you cross the finish line, start rehydrating immediately. Before your post-run celebration beer or wine, make sure you have had plenty of water -- after all, that is what your body needs. Replenish yourself with some carbs and protein, stretch, and put on a layer of clothes over what you raced in for your walk back to the hotel to keep you warm.</p>
<h2>the morning after</h2>
<p>The morning after the race, jog 10-20 minutes to get your legs moving a little bit.</p>
<h2>the next month</h2>
<p>Following that, the next month should be about easing off of running to let your muscles repair. If you're going to run, take it very, very easy, don’t race, and don’t do speed workouts. I recommend cross training. While I pick-up yoga (and cooking), try a racquet sport or something different that keeps you moving, but not training at full capacity. This will not only be good for your body, but you will start your next season feeling fresh and eager to be running again, and will help you keep your post-race emotions in check.</p>
<h2>how you spend your post-marathon time</h2>
<p>How you spend your month post-marathon is important. As runners, we are sometimes greedy about our fitness, and we want to stay in peak form all year round. This is impossible to do, and trying will often lead to injuries and feeling of burnout.</p>

<p>Recently there was “Free Day of Yoga.” In dozens of cities across the globe, participating yoga and pilates studios opened up their spaces by offering free classes to the community. Studio owners and teachers offered this gift to students in the spirit of sharing the love and bliss of yoga, not to mention the health benefits of practicing the sport.</p>
<p><a href="/honolulu">lululemon athletica Ala Moana</a> sponsored Hawaii’s Free Day of Yoga. We wanted people to try different styles, instructors and studios (at no cost) in order to stretch their mind, body, and spirit.</p>
<p>Our community came out to enjoy this special event. Almost all of the classes were packed to capacity. One of the local studio owners, Conrad Gacki of <a href="http://lockyourknee.com/" target="_blank">Bikram Yoga Nimitz</a> had crammed classes from sun up (5.30 a.m. class) to sundown (7 p.m. class).</p>
<p>Gacki was so inspired by the Free Day of Yoga that he has decided to visit all of the studios that were involved in the community event in order to help strengthen the local yoga community. Educators at lululemon Ala Moana have received nothing but positive feedback for helping to organize this event. We even had a 72-year-old guest mention that she attended five free classes on that day! Nothing could make us smile more. The work we do at lululemon is for the community, it is to share the benefits of yoga and fitness with beginners, elite athletes, and everyone in between.</p>

<p>As runners, we learn to push through pain and discomfort. However, we are often stubborn when it comes to listening to our own bodies.</p>
<p>When you are in tune with your body, you can recognize the signs that tell you to rest to prevent the onset of an injury. Runners that can recognize these signs often choose to ignore them, and push through the pain because we don't want to miss a workout, but listening to what your body needs is the best way to keep you running strong.</p>
<p>Any time I have ever had a running injury, I always look backwards to what occurred leading up to the injury. Every time, there were warning signs - and now, after 12 years of competitive running and two stress fractures this year, I finally know when I am in danger of another injury.</p>
<p>For me, the signs that I am overtraining or need to take an extra day off begins with nagging pains in a tendon. Often, the pain is not bad enough to warrant a day off, but it's enough for me to be aware of it. Secondly, my injuries are always preceded by a bad cold or flu. Before both of my stress fractures, and a tendon injury in ’08, I came down with a lingering flu-like cold. Before my first stress fracture, I even lost my voice for a couple of weeks, but I foolishly did not take time off from running. Irritability is also a sign of overtraining for me.</p>
<p>Every runner is different. Often runners who are over-training report difficulty sleeping, an increased heart rate, or lack of motivation. The important thing is to recognize the warning signs that your body gives you.</p>
<p>As I become a more mature runner, I am more in tune with the needs of my body, especially during periods of intense training and racing. Last week, after a hard, 15 mile run, I felt a nagging in my ankle, coupled with feelings of stress. Instead of training through it, I took two days of complete rest, and visited the physical therapist to have it worked on right away. Those two things knocked out the nagging pain, and I probably prevented a more serious injury. Three days later, I went on to place 2nd in an 8k!</p>
<p>Listen to your body! Racing and hard training is enough of a challenge without being injured. Stay healthy out there.</p>

<p>My sisters and I share the same parents but we have our own bodies. I may be able to get into the splits and hold a gnarly headstand, but when it comes to endurance activities, all three of my sisters can pass me in a heartbeat. My friend Jessica commented while I was feeling left behind in the dust during a family hike that "the girls are just built differently."</p>
<p>Our bodies shape the type athletes that we become. Athletes come in all shapes and sizes too. Look at gymnast Shawn Johnson and basketball player Yao Ming.</p>
<p>Think of your body as a unique gift that is designed to perform like none other. How would you start loving your body if you stopped comparing it to others? What image you would have of yourself if mirrors did not exist and we based our image off of how we felt inside? After a sweaty hike or a killer dance class my body reaches a potential so high I could flash the sky at the top of a mountain...</p>
<p>Love your body and the possibilities it has for reaching your highest physical potential.</p>

<p>About a year before I started working at lululemon athletica, I injured my back at my previous job. I saw a chiropractor, three orthopedic specialists, a couple of massage therapists, and at least seven different physical therapists over the course of a year. I'm an athlete, but living with my injury left me feeling sorry for myself and totally resigned. Prior to injuring my back, my favorite activities were running, riding my bicycle, and lifting weights, and I was no longer able to do these things without increasing pain.</p>
<p>Recovering from my injury has given me a completely different definition to the word "fit". I used to think that fitness meant looking hot in a bikini and being able to complete a 5K in the top 30% of my age group. I now know that for me fitness means feeling good in my body, without comparison and without judgment.</p>
<p>It took me a long time to learn the importance of staying active without increasing pain. I decided to slowly build up to a level of fitness that I was comfortable with. I had several physical therapy programs that I was responsible for, so instead of completing them at home, I took them to the gym with me, along with my limitations so that I didn't re-injure myself. Some days I would hop on an elliptical machine, even if only for three minutes, simply because I wanted to get the feeling of running without all of the consequences. At the end of my workout, I would tell myself how proud I was for completing those three minutes on the elliptical. After all, it was three minutes longer than I'd done the previous day!</p>
<h2>The main elements that helped me recover:</h2>
<p>1) Yoga. Not only will yoga increase your strength and flexibility, but it will also boost your level of confidence and it feels really good. Maybe you won't be able to do all of the poses as well as others in your class, but the beauty of yoga is that it isn’t a competition. Everyone in the class is at a different level and nobody is comparing. Introduce yourself to the instructor and ask for modifications to poses that might be difficult with your particular situation. Soon you will start to recognize ways to modify certain poses on your own.</p>
<p>2) Meeting other people who'd been injured. If I saw somebody on mat at the gym doing the same physical therapy exercises in my program, I would approach them and get into a conversation. At the end of the day, it is simply encouraging to know that you’re not the only one.</p>
<p>3) Volunteering. I couldn't participate in the races and events that I used to do, so I signed up to be a volunteer. This is a very rewarding way to stay involved in the athletic community while you’re recovering, and you still get a free t-shirt.</p>
<p>4) Icing it. This was the most tedious thing to make myself do for my injury, but it's the easiest and most natural way to decrease inflammation. 10 minutes on, 10 minutes off, followed by 10 more minutes on. Do it. Often.</p>
<p>5) Reformer Pilates. My core wasn't quite strong enough to be able to do a group Pilates mat class, but the reformer supports your body throughout the workout to provide resistance, core strengthening, and flexibility.</p>
<p>6) Swimming. I learned how to swim to make up for the cardio I could no longer get from running or spinning. My boyfriend appreciated this because I burn off my bitchiness through cardiovascular exercise.</p>
<p>7) Living powerfully. Be proud of yourself for every step you take toward recovery. Motivational speaker, Brian Tracy, says "You become what you think about most of the time."  What will your future will be like if you are constantly complaining and feeling sorry for yourself for this injury? Take back the power!</p>
<p>This is your body, the way it is and the way that it's not. You can spend your energy complaining, or you can choose to like yourself. Which of these choices leaves you feeling resigned and which leaves you feeling empowered? Ultimately, it is up to you.</p>

<p>Getting down and dirty in yoga class is admirable – getting off your mat and practicing outdoors is extraordinary. Taking yoga outdoors stimulates the senses and heightens physical awareness. I have found hiking yoga to be one of the most invigorating and spiritual activities.</p>
<p>Without breath, you are not doing yoga. So why not breathe deeply while hiking and explore the possibilities of connecting to the earth. Groups across the country are offering hiking yoga classes/guides that are specific to the geographic area. Eric Kipp in San Francisco leads urban Hiking Yoga groups that focus on breath and engaging the core. Eric takes you inside the romantic hidden spots of the city while stopping after every huge hill to do a relaxing warrior or triangle pose.</p>
<p>The beauty of nature, like being next to a campfire, immediately inspires you to emerge from your safe zone. Hiking with a group promotes rich social interaction and human connection. I have found the shared experience to be rewarding and quite awakening to my bodies capabilities.</p>
