Ambassador Seth Daley is one of the yoga teachers at Halifax's first-ever Yoga Fest on September 29.

meet halifax

Haligonian: hal-i-GON-ian, noun. An individual from, or a resident of, Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Haligonians are connectors and community creators. We are bluegrass musicians and folk singers, beach dwellers and surf lovers, ballsy student activists and fresh student artists, we are local and urban farmers, and we are all connected by our home. Our city is the perfectly balanced love child of the relaxed and welcoming vibrations of an east coast small town and of a thriving cultural hub. Though pint size as far as cities go, when you’re here, you feel it; this place is something big.

yoga fest

To give our community one more excuse to experience Halifax’s inspiring oneness we created Yoga Fest; a one-day complimentary yoga festival happening on Saturday September 29th, 2012. We are creating a space for 600+ Haligonians to connect and practice yoga together nestled in the middle of our beautiful city on the grassy fields of the Garrison Grounds. We’ll provide what's needed to satisfy all the senses by bringing Halifax's local music, food, and artists together.

Ambassador Amanda MacEachern and Halifax educator Kate are ready to get their Yoga Fest on!

how it's all going down

Yoga Fest’s four yoga classes will be taught by yogis who are fearless leaders in our community.
8:30-9:30am: Moksha-inspired and taught by Kirsten Malloy from Moksha Yoga Halifax
10:00-11:00am: Power flow with ambassador Taylor MacGillivary. Get turned upside down and inside out!
11:30-12:30: Classic Ashtanga, taught by ambassadors Carmen Holm and Seth Daley from the Ashtanga Yoga Shala.
12:30-2:00pm Picnic time! Pack a picnic or purchase the fresh and local deliciousness of Nomad Gourmet, Halifax’s favourite food truck.
2:00-3:15pm: Vinyasa Flow with ambassador Amanda MacEachern from Halifax Yoga.
3:30-5:00pm We’ll end our day with a concert from bluegrass band, Halifax’s own, The Unseen Strangers, and opening band Take Part. Enjoy an extended savasana or shake it out to the music.

see you there!

Yoga Fest welcomes experienced and beginner yogis and yoginis. Come from far and wide, kick off your flip flops and feel the grass in-between your toes, open your heart and your hips, listen to live bluegrass, and get connected. Drop in for one class or stay for all four!

Out beside Citadel Hill and beyond Spring Garden Road, there is a field; we’ll meet you there with our shoes off and our mats unrolled.

Visit the Halifax Yoga Fest Facebook event page to RSVP and for more details.

Like many cities, Atlanta's yoga community is diverse and spread out over multiple neighbourhoods, which doesn't always make it easy to practice together. On September 30th, we are bringing Atlanta yogis together for one big outdoor yoga class at Piedmont Park with music afterwards. Atlanta-area educator and yoga instructor Rachelle is here with details.

the atlanta yoga scene

Although I’m not quite a Georgia peach, I’m proud to call myself an Atlantan (technically an Atlanta-arean since I’m temporarily OTP, don’t judge). My absolute favourite part of this city is the yoga scene – the teachers and practitioners alike have been some of the most amazing people I’ve ever encountered. Anyone who lives here will vouch for me and say the same. In our city, you can take classes from almost any yoga tradition with passionate, talented and practiced yogis.

rockstars rule our community

Take Neda Honarvar, generally badass lady known for her Metal Yoga classes. If you saw her on the street with her long dark hair and tattooed sleeves, you might not assume she’s a yogi. After one session of metal yoga & some of her tough love, you’ll find yourself rocking out arm balances and inversions like you never thought you could. Octavia Raheem’s classes have you covered when you’re in the mood for a reflective power flow, complete with mellow hip-hop vibes. She’ll push you to your limit, over the edge and keep you in plank until you sweat through the grittiness and find your bliss. Todd LaBerge’s class is perfection when you need chill West Coast energy. Don’t worry though; you’ll be rocking through vinyasas & getting your body warmed up to move powerfully through your Warrior series. In this town, there’s something for everyone.

bridge the gap, meet me on the mat

As a yoga teacher, I’ve experienced the glares of terror when I walk into a regularly scheduled class to sub. It’s no lie that we’re all just as attached to our teachers, studios & yoga communities, as we are our daily cup of coffee (or chai tea, wheatgrass shot – your choice). The real challenge then, in our city of yoga, is to push our selves outside of our boxes. Dare I challenge a Buckhead yogini to go get her sweat on in the Old Fourth Ward? Indeed, I do.

Piedmont Park, 5:30 PM: You, me and 2,000 of our closest yoga friends sun saluting at 10th & Flow.

10th & flow

10th & Flow is the biggest yoga/music/sweat fest of Atlanta's year, celebrating life, health & happiness. Neda, Todd & Octavia will lead us through a practice and then we’ll all get funky as Ganesh Giri Jaya plays into the sunset. All proceeds from the event (which is totally free!) will go to Strong4Life, an organization fighting the battle against childhood obesity.

Many of us know the definition of yoga to be “to unite”, what better place to do so than in the middle of our city? See you on September 30th at 10th: let’s flow Atlanta!

RSVP at the 10th & Flow Facebook event page and join us!

The very first Gospel of Sweat happened last Friday in New York City at the Riverside Church. Over 800 yogis, dancers, riders, and runners, came together to dig deeper into the inspiration behind our perspiration - a testament to the cultural shift that is taking place across the globe. We celebrated spirituality, community, and the personal journey that is our practice.

Watch a video recap of the event here:

sweat seekers united

There were many elements that went into creating the Gospel of Sweat. The space was magical; built in 1927, the architecture of this church in Harlem looks like it was plucked out of a European city. The crowd’s energy was contagious, and you could tell this diverse mixture of sweat-seeking New Yorkers bring their practices into all aspects of their lives. The ingredient that converted the Gospel from an event into a transformational experience was the incredible line-up of influential leaders: Suzanne Sterling, Schuyler Grant, Kay Kay Clivio, Melanie Griffith, Alan Finger, Gabrielle Bernstein, Kerri Kelly, Elena Brower, and MC Jeff Krasno. It was like being in the best yoga-spin-meditation class that you could ever imagine.

a recap of the night

Suzanne gave us all goose bumps as she sang songs of freedom in her powerfully angelic voice.

In reflecting upon her “calling” to be a yoga teacher, Schuyler told us of how she discovered that one’s calling is not something decided for you, but rather your choice to honor who you are.

Kay Kay shared the turning point where “getting a good workout” turns into something more.

With the same passion she inspires us with during a hard climb, Melanie brought us on a timeline of her life from lawyer, to mom, to teacher, to cancer survivor, to “mind-body-cardio” warrior.

Alan, a literal lifetime-yogi, guided us through the meditation that has allowed him to find calm inside, no matter what is occurring in the outside world.

Gabby enrolled a whole new troop of “spirit junkies” as she described how the moment that life brings us to our knees - the moment we know we have to change - is the greatest gift we can experience.

Kerri Kelly engaged us in her dedication to yoga-activism via Off the Mat Into the World and challenged us to empower ourselves as a community through voting.

Elena Brower shared how her biggest life lesson through yoga thus far is that we are the one’s responsible for the environment of our minds.

there is only one teacher

The common theme that kept re-emerging as each speaker took the podium was that though they are all teachers who have the ability to impact many, there is only one teacher that ultimately will change your life: you.

What is your Gospel of Sweat?

Yoga can make you more flexible but what does it have to do with politics? Sarah and Meg, our yogi/bloggers-on-the-ground at this year's Republican and Democratic conventions are here to tell us how yoga played a role in each of these gatherings.

yoga at the rnc

Sarah from our Hyde Park Village store in Tampa, attended this year's Republican National Convention.

planting seeds

Excitement, stress, even a little fear buzzed around Tampa, Florida as the RNC began to take form. The atmosphere was tense, the traffic was horrendous and it was obvious that the last thing on everyone's minds was a little something we like to call "work-life balance." Enter: the HuffPost Oasis.

From the moment I read about her in an old Yoga Journal article, Seane Corn has been my girl. She's got a big ol' head of hair (I could stare at that hair for days) and a big ol' brain full of wisdom. The day before the convention started, I took her "Three Realms of Consciousness" workshop. Here I was able to hear first hand how her vision for bringing yoga to a political convention came to life. She stated that our future leaders of the country are certainly ones who need peace, mindfulness, clarity- well, basically all that yoga embodies. Republicans were about to be shown what was up.

How did Off the Mat and Into the World (Seane Corn's organization), along with the Huffington Post, bring all of this goodness to a group of unsuspecting politicians? Healthy meals that were easy to prepare. Back and hand massages. Organic make-up touch-ups. Yoga classes all day long. Meditation and breathing exercise. And juices - did I mention how much juice was at this thing? Smoothies, coconut waters and a rainbow of juices as far as the eye could see. The space was large, air conditioned and lined with candles. It smelled like peach bellinis and looked like a 5-star spa in Switzerland. Guests could sit in squishy, delicious chairs and -- oh yeah, nap in a sleep machine. It was like a place out of a dream. I almost ran for office just so that I could live at Oasis.

No matter what political view we stand behind, I think we can agree that the yogic lifestyle is our guide into what is rational, peaceful and healing. Someone is going to run our country and I am thankful that the Oasis was at the convention to plant the seeds of mindfulness.

yoga at the dnc

Meg from our Southpark store in Charlotte, NC, attended this year's Democratic Nation Convention.

feel the expansion

I can’t remember the posture I relaxed myself into when I heard Southpark Store Ambassador, Adam Whiting say it. “Now,” he said, “feel the expansion.” It was a complimentary yoga practice at Midtown Park in Charlotte, North Carolina with an almost reachable view of Charlotte’s skyline. This calm served as the quiet before the politics, passion, press and entertainment invaded our town. This was the first day of the Democratic National Convention in a city relatively new to intense, international attention. Now, feel the expansion.

This DNC brought nothing short of a challenging pace and fresh experiences for me. I watched famous journalists do what they do best. I needed “credentials”. The Secret Service told me where to park. I reconnected with a friend from college with challenging, academic theory of religion and politics – over simple, classic glass bottles of local soda. I stood in front of a sand sculpture of President Barack Obama. I practiced with yogis from all over the country. I listened to Chef Marcus Samuelsson talk about food choices. I volunteered with Off the Mat and Into the World at the Huffington Post Oasis. I ran after a Washington Post reporter leaving our store to tell him I liked his post yesterday. I heard things I agreed with. I heard things I disagreed with. I picked up swag. I got to see a panel of famous, female entrepreneurs speak about collaboration, innovation and the importance of female talent. And I’m not exactly sure where else The Foo Fighters , Flo Rida, John Legend and James Taylor would all perform within the same radius within days of each other.

Myself and another Southpark store educator, Mary Catherine, met Ariana Huffington. She graciously signed her book “Fearless” and inscribed nothing short of a game changer - “To Meg, Fear nothing… Ariana”. Fear nothing…now, feel the expansion.

With Wanderlust Whistler just over a week away, we wanted to introduce you to one of our favourite Vancouver-based instructors, Mara Branscombe, who just last weekend taught a sunset yoga class to 1,000 people at Kits Beach - many of whom had just run the SeaWheeze half marathon!

what style of yoga do you teach?

Vinyasa Flow, Hatha, Restorative, and Prenatal.

how did you get started with yoga?

While completing a BA in Cultural History and Eastern Philosophy I discovered BKS Iyengar's "Light on Yoga" in the library. Completely intrigued, I signed the book out and started a home practice. Two years later I found myself travelling in India and studying yoga - this was 16 years ago!

who/what are your biggest teachers?

Wow, this is a big question. Some of my most influential teachers to date are Mary-Jo Fetterly, Crystal Pite, Rhoda Pitcher, and Christine Selda. The deepening of my yoga, art, dance and ceremonial practice has been such a powerful teacher in my personal awakening and curiosity of body-mind-spirit integration. My greatest teacher to date has come with the birth of my amazing daughter, Desa Rose, who is 19 months old.

other than yoga, what are you passionate about?

Dancing, painting, ceremony, sailing, gardening, spending days with my family in nature, going on retreats, travelling.

what sort of classes are you planning for whistler?

I am really looking forward to teaching four very different classes that will draw upon my training and background in vinyasa flow, meditation, pranayama, and shamanic practice. I am so excited to be working with musicians such as Shaman's Dream, DJ Drez, DJ Urn, and Steve Gold. I am also leading a hike that includes meditation and shamanic ceremony at the top of the mountain.

whose classes are you excited to take at wanderlust?

Seane Corn, Sianna Sherman, Chris Chavez... I would love to practice with everyone if I could!

one thing people don't know about you?

I have sailed across the Atlantic Ocean.

Marathon Monday. To many, this phrase might not mean much, but here in Boston…it means everything.

the super bowl of running

For some, the Boston Marathon is the Super Bowl of running -- the goal every runner strives to achieve. For others, it’s a day to celebrate -- a major holiday where roads are closed and work is canceled. And starting early in the morning, fans spill outside to line the entire 26.2 mile course.

Last year, I joined the sideline crowd with lululemon’s cheer station on 'Heartbreak Hill' -- one of the hardest stretches of the race where runners need the most support. We arrived early, pumped music, and danced with motivational signs.

I still remember watching contestants pass by: wheelchair competitors, with flexed arms and sweat pouring. Military crew in full uniform. The amazing Kenyan, Geoffrey Mutai, on his way to win. And the very last charity runner, winning a personal battle for both himself and someone else. And I knew in this moment, “I want that.”

honoured, excited and terrified

Fast forward one year later, and I could not be more honored, excited and – let’s be honest – terrified to participate in this monumental day.

what we don't see

Because boy - I had no idea what I was in for! What spectators don't see are your struggles with chafing. They don't hear your alarm ring at 6 a.m. before sunrise on Saturday, feel your blisters growing, or watch you trekking through snow...in the dark.

That’s why the incomparable support of Boston’s sideline – from Newton to Boylston Street – now means more than ever before. It’s funny, but I’ve learned you actually do hear the things people say along the way. "You're almost there!" starts at mile six. "It's all downhill from here!" as you approach Heartbreak Hill. Or my personal favourite, "You're looking great!" Really? With spit foaming at the mouth, and salt crusting to my face, I doubt it – but hey, thanks for making me think I do!

why you should cheer on april 16

So, if you are in Boston on April 16, go stake out your spot and cheer on the runners. Because, we can train all we want and eat the right gel packs during the race, but it’s that smiling face, that crazy cheering fan, that is going to pick us up and push us forward when we think we have nothing left.

And honestly, it really doesn't matter what you do – hold a sign, hand out high-fives, or yell any ridiculous phrase. Because those small gestures mean more than you will ever know.

If you're in Boston this weekend, stop by and say hi at the pre-marathon expo! Look for a big, red box and you'll find us. Not in Boston? We'll be sharing our marathon weekend experience via Twitter (#bostonmarathon). Good luck to all the athletes, and see you on April 16!

Last year, Alexis advised people heading to Coachella on the plateaus and pitfalls of getting awesome in the music festival circuit. She wrote her entry from a wistful yet wise point-of-view, dispensing such sage advice as “your sunglasses will be in every photo – if they are the weak link in your bag, fix it” and “fanny packs are critical for hands-free partying.” This year she is attending Coachella and shares her motivations for returning below.

The countdown is on, my friends. Seven days!

I have been to Coachella before. In fact, I wrote a blog post last year about my experiences in Indio and how to best prepare for the ensuing mayhem. While experiencing some remorse over not going again, I reasoned that I had made the pilgrimage to Coachella before and that it was time to cross other goals off my list.

I was wrong. What I realized while gazing at my pal’s mobile uploads all festival weekend (yes, I am a masochist) was that sometimes an occasion is so awesome that hitting it twice is the right answer.

So now what? My ticket, accommodation and flights are booked. My mates and I are already planning the Ace Hotel and Trader Joe’s visits. I’ve replaced 2011’s acronym F.O.M.O. with W.W.Z.S.D. (what-would-Zoe-Saldana-do) for outfit inspiration. All that’s left is the music.

Oh yeah - the music! With all the VIP-poolside-margarita-hotel-hopping-palm-tree distractions, it’s easy to forget that Coachella is all about the tunes. Last time I went, my buddy Eric made a playlist that we ended up playing on repeat the entire weekend. It was a great way to get familiar with lesser-known acts; to this day I still associate Bloc Party, Wolfmother and Gnarls Barkley together with our 2006 Coachella “soundtrack.”

Without further ado, here is my 2012 Can’t-Miss Coachella Playlist. It’s impossible to get all of my favourite acts on one list (the festival really is THAT big) so feel free to add your favourites and get the party started.

2012 can’t-miss coachella playlist

*Please note: due to certain, ahem, “restrictions” we are no longer able to list these songs in downloadable playlist format. We are working on a solution soon so we can continue sharing the sound love with you.

santigold – disparate youth
Santigold is probably in my top three of artists I am most excited to see. The buzz surrounding her live shows is ferocious.

the weeknd – the morning
The Prince-esque guitar, the unabashed crooning, the auto-tune, the collaborations with Drake…invest in The Weeknd because this show is guaranteed money in the bank. Do yourself a favour and listen to some Frank Ocean while you’re at it.

the black angels – young men dead
I first got to know The Black Angels after one of their songs was featured in Red Bull’s seriously awesome “Art Of Flight” snowboarding video from last winter. If the apocalypse comes as promised this year, “Young Men Dead” will be my soundtrack.

justice – civilization
French people know how to dance. They know how to party. They can wear scarves without looking like twits and eat cheese without gaining weight. Let’s just face it: they’re cooler than the rest of us.

pulp – common people
Between Madness, Tim Armstrong, Mazzy Star and Pulp, the old school acts at Coachella this year are legit. Watching Jarvis Cocker strut his stuff is a can’t miss.

beirut – santa fe
Santa Fe = the catchiest song of 2011. Beirut is producing some of the most innovative music in recent memory. Get into it.

miike snow – paddling out
Okay, I already loved Miike Snow in a borderline-creepy way…and then they released their most recent album and full-on obsession gripped my headphones.

kaskade – 4 am
Kaskade may fall into guilty pleasure territory (see also: David Guetta and Avicii) but I don’t care. We all know these shows are going to be the hot mix so pack your dancing shoes and let’s make it happen.

explosions in the sky – your hand in mine
If you’re looking for a timeout from beat-heavy hip-hop and electro dance parties, check these guys out. Their most recent album is interesting all the way through and only gets better with every listen.

childish gambino – freaks and geeks
The lyrics to this song are so clever. I have a feeling that Childish Gambino is going to be huge so catch him here for “I saw him when…” memories years from now.

bon iver – calgary
It’s always an incredible experience watching an artist perform at the pinnacle of their career. Justin Vernon is known for his interesting live collaborations - let’s hope he has some tricks up his sleeves.

radiohead – weird fishes arpeggi
Thom and the crew are known for pulling Neil Young-style “we’re not playing anything but our latest album’s tracks” antics on tour…but if I have one wish it’s that they put this gem on their playlist.

dr. dre featuring snoop dogg – nuthin’ but a g thang
While you may not listen to these dudes on the regular anymore, this is a Coachella must. Snoop’s never been caught slippin’ – make sure you aren’t either and make this show a priority.

azaelia banks – 212
This is going to be a CRAZY SHOW. Believe it.

the horrors – still life
A favourite of music bloggers everywhere, this could be the sleeper hit of the entire festival.

girl talk – play your part (part 1)
The raging debate about the legitimacy of mash-up artists aside, Girl Talk is going to be a PARTY. Get sweaty in the crowd or safely observe how crazy humans can get from afar.

david guetta featuring kid cudi – memories
78 million views on YouTube can’t be a coincidence. Guetta is FUN – get over the street cred and turn up the party (this also applies to Kaskade, Avicii and anything else that hurts to the hipster bone).

florence and the machine – cosmic love
This show is going to be one for the books. Let’s hope the festival planners put Florence and company on during the gorgeous Indio sunset.

st. vincent – marrow
Every track on St. Vincent’s third album “Strange Mercy” is absolutely magical. Check her out if you need a little mellow time in between party acts.

m83 – wait
I’m already getting goose bumps just thinking about this being performed.

Hopefully this playlist will give you ideas for your own list. Alexis will be one of 20,000 girls wearing a fringe purse, jean cutoffs, bohemian blouse and taking Instagram photos (she knows she’s being SUPER original )– give her a high five if you see her in Indio!

what to expect

what’s in the boxes?
Let’s just say if we were to lay all the product out side by side it would be as long as the Sears Tower is high. Okay, that might be a bit of a stretch but in all seriousness we’ve got tons of luon for both women and men.

good things come to those who wait
Yes, expect lines but good things come to those who wait. Our lines will be indoors (take that, Chitown winter!) and will have ample entertainment (think music and demos).

check, please!
Before hopping in the line, you’ll meet our bag-check team. It is mandatory to check all coats and bags – think, two hands to shop with. All your essentials will go into an individual clear plastic bag. An outfit with a pocket (or two) will be your best warehouse sale companion. Just enough room for your crucial belongs (e.g. cell phone, cash or cards, I.D.) and totally hands free.

the essentials
Did you get that? Cash, debit or credit cards, and I.D.
*giftcards will not be accepted at the warehouse sale

navigating the sea of luon
All products will be organized by size with sections for men, women and accessories. There will be layouts and maps around so no one gets lost, as well as plenty of educators to answer any questions that may come up.

try it on for size
There will be separate communal change rooms for both men and women. Wear easy slip-off clothes if you’re planning to try things on for size.

Chitown, are you ready to throw your diamonds in the sky and get yoga high?
