welcome to the world of guest etc.

We have an incredible person working at our Cumberland store in Toronto who has created something we are blown away by. Please meet Jonathan Schuster, the brains behind the badass blog Guest Etc.

What is this site all about? Think The Sartorialist meets Down Dogs & lunges. Jonathan has perfectly captured how to rock #thesweatlife with major swagger.

A native Torontonian, Jonathan is crazy about both yoga and fashion. He is passionate about our product and is constantly inspired to match our pieces with trendy and high-end street wear - one look at his blog and you'll see what we mean. We are so inspired by his vision and how he puts things together - he's got "the touch" and we can't get enough of his posts.

We are going to be regularly featuring Jonathan's Guest Etc. posts on our blog so you can get rad ideas on how to look badass to-and-from class and beyond. Be sure to check out his site too - he makes it look like Wunder Unders were made to go with Hermes scarves and Opening Ceremony sandals. So cool, right?

Are there any items you'd like to see Jonathan incorporate into an outfit? Let us know - who knows what kind of magic he has up his ever-so-fashionable sleeves!

Sometimes we’re racy and sometimes we’re lacy! So when the National Ballet called and asked us to construct a tutu to help commemorate their 60th anniversary we saw it as the perfect opportunity to showcase technical beauty. We did our best curtsey to accept the honour and then buried ourselves in a sea of luon (technical) and lace (beautiful).

meet antonia, lead yoga designer here at lululemon
Meet Antonia, (you know her as the creative brains behind many of the yoga pieces you love to love). Spending the first half of her life mostly en pointe, Antonia was the perfect candidate to take on the tutu project. We caught up with the dancer turned designer to score all the deats:

how did you get from dance to design?
I danced for 13 years, doing everything from Ballet to Jazz to Modern. I just loved to move! As a long-legged girl (who could never find pants that were long enough) my mom took to sewing me leotards and dance pants as well as all of the costumes for my studio. Without ever really realizing it, I was ‘designing’ from a really young age, making requests and adjustments to the dancewear my mom was constructing for me. When I wasn’t dancing I was sewing up little projects of my own (in third grade I designed scrunchies that I sold to my classmates).

Although I didn’t pursue dance professionally, the 13 years of competitions and costumes seemed like it was the perfect training for what would later become my career in athletic apparel design. It wasn’t something I’d planned but more so something I fell into.

the national ballet and lululemon, long-time besties?
What many people don’t know is that we’ve been in relationship with The National Ballet of Canada since we launched our dance line in 2007. At the time of the initial launch, the relationship involved design meetings with the dancers and having them test the gear for feedback. Even though we don’t design a specific dancewear line any longer, our Toronto stores have maintained a strong relationship with The National Ballet. It was this ongoing partnership that made us a great fit to participate in the tutu project.

tell us about the tutu!
The inspiration for creating this tutu was drawn from the famous ballet, Swan Lake. Swan Lake is the most demanding ballet for the principal dancer to preform technically and athletically. As an athletic apparel brand that focuses on functional gear (that looks great too) it felt so perfect to draw my inspiration from here. The tutu had to be able to deliver technical features to allow the dancer to think of nothing but her performance and, of course, look elegant and classic as well.

can you tell us a bit about the technology in the tutu?
The key technology used in the piece is called Naked Seam. This is a seam that is constructed without the use of thread. Many of the garments we design use this bonded seam in areas to reduce friction and abrasion the wearer may feel (see: chafing). Oh, and of course, we used our signature lightweight fabrics!

from design to sketches to construction, who else was involved in the project?
This project was great to work on as a side project to my regular role. In order to use the best talents of those around me, I enlisted my mom, Shirley Iamartino, to be the seamstress on the project and bring the tutu I envisioned to life. (Side note: in addition to my dance costumes, my mom was also the seamstress behind my wedding gown!). The illustrations and mood board was the work of Lauren Powell, one of our other yoga designers (and also a former dancer). Without the collaboration and help of these ladies the tutu would still be only a vision in my mind.

Bravo Antonia! We love this tutu (and you!). Wanna see the other 59 tutus? Check them out here.

You’d be unlikely to find athletic gear, like lululemon, in a fashion magazine but some of the women here insist that the Cool Racerback deserves to be. The tank is a fundamental part of their daily outfits.

melorin

why I love cool racerbacks
“They’re so versatile. I wear them everywhere: circuit classes; running; to and from yoga and on the weekends under jackets and blouses with some heels added and you have the perfect casual outfit. Also they're so easy to pack when travelling.”

the colours
“I love the bright coloured ones; they're great to add some pop to my wardrobe when I need it. My favorite colour is the rubber ducky. I get so excited when new colours arrive!

dressing them up
“My current favorite summer look is wearing a cool racer back with a cardigan over top, paired with some shorts or skinny jeans and some flats. I’ll layer it with a couple of unique necklaces draped over and a fun, coloured purse.

Melorin is a purchasing manager raised in North Vancouver. One of her favorite place she's travelled is Gili Islands in Indonesia.

carolyn

why I love cool racerbacks
“I love the Cool Racerbacks because they’re extremely simple. I love simple because I wear yoga clothes all day long and I want to be able to style them up when I’m going to and from the studio. They’re just so versatile for me. They look really good layered but often I only wear one while I’m doing yoga to reduce on laundry.”

the colours
“I love all the colours they come in. I’m really into the pastels, especially heathered grapeseed, which isn’t a colour I’d normally wear. I love the heathered tango red too because you don’t see a lot of them. The heathered ones hide the sweat well; it blends in a little bit.”

dressing them up
“I love the length of them. You can wear it with any kind of pants; you can have it hanging over your pants or shorts or have it tucked in, like with a high-waisted skirt. Usually I dress them up with a scarf and I wear a lot of cardigans. They all look great under my cardigans and jean jackets. In Vancouver the weather is so changeable; it’s nice to have an extra layer in your bag to put on if it gets cold; and they fit into every single purse I own.”

Carolyn is a yoga instructor for Semperviva and YYoga as well as Ambassador for the lululemon on West 4th, Vancouver. She does a lot of yoga and a lot of smiling.

elim

why I love cool racerbacks
“The Cool Racerback is my favorite because I can wear any type of support under it. I can wear it with a Flow Y bra (or my new favorite the Arise Bra) or any one of my standard bras; for minimal to full support. I wear them for running, Vinyasa and Hatha yoga.”

the colours
“I have five white Cool Racerbacks. I love them. I wear them on their own or layered underneath other coloured tank and shirts.”

dressing them up
“I'll wear my Cool Racerbacks with anything. I love to wear them under my power mesh tops from the lab. I’ll dress them up by putting a blazer over the top or just with jewelry and leave my hair down.”

Elim is our Photo Studio Coordinator and Stylist. She loves to people watch the streets of Vancouver and has goals to work in a certain magazine in New York City.

bailie

why I love cool racerbacks
“The length is awesome which makes it a perfect layering piece - I throw it under a favorite shirt and ta da! ready for the office and yoga without messing around with a change of clothes. I love how light and breathable this tank is too. I usually pair it with the Arise Bra and my trusty Wunder Unders for working up a serious sweat in one of those impromptu Spin or Power Vinyasa Flow classes.”

the colours
“My favourite colour is Wren. Not only is it named after a lovely little bird but olive green is an amazing transitional color - beautiful in the summer but dark enough for those colder months.”

dressing them up
“For me it's all about the layers. It's perfect under my loose flowing tops paired with some worn in cutoffs, great sunglasses and a beloved necklace. Hello Sunday beach day! Or I’ll do a long jersey, high-waisted skirt and maybe a pair of amazing wooden wedges.”

Bailie is a proud member of the Men’s Team working as the Allocation Analyst (aka – gifting the stores with new product … whoop!). Born and raised in Calgary and, yes, still loves the Calgary Flames.

They all said it in different ways ('versatile', 'simple', 'favourite', 'ta-da!') but the way that the Cool Racerback's can switch from sports gear to street-wear and back is what makes it one of our essentials.

The renovation clock is ticking. We've blacked out our online store as we move ahead with our site's renovation. We've affectionately called the place "Boutique Noir" because let's face it, it sounds better that way. To celebrate the state of affairs, we interviewed Sheree Waterson, our Executive VP of Merchandise Management. Why? You'll see.

Sheree is the woman ultimately behind the fabulous colour you know and love from lululemon. We are all intrigued by the way she plays with texture, shape and proportion, all with function at the core, no matter what she’s creating.

We’re also intrigued by the amount of black in her wardrobe. The woman can wear black. I mean really wear black. Think 29 days out of 30: black shoes, pants, tops, jackets, hair, nail polish, accessories – all black. Considering our online store is about to look a lot like Sheree’s wardrobe, it only seemed fitting to spend a little time with the woman to talk about her favourite colour. (Is black a colour?)

the woman in black

Elissa: So how long have you been wearing all black?
Sheree: Since I started in the business. I used to wear a lot of colour. When I started, I was a buyer for designer sportswear. We used to travel a lot and so, you know, your wardrobe has to be easy. Truthfully, I love dressing this way because it’s easy to play with proportion when you keep the palette all black. My clothes are all black and my environment has to be white. I admit. I send myself white flowers. I need a clean blank canvas to create so that ADD doesn't creep in.

It’s funny, when I lived in San Fran, I had some friends who had a shop called “Alabaster”. They helped me decorate my apartment. I said I wanted this particular Napolean couch in white velvet and another piece in white silk satin, a look inspired by this Oscar De La Renta dress. “Honey,” she said, “we can’t do that. It’s going to look like a wedding cake in here.” That was the point.

E: So you own a lot of black luon?
S: Oh yeah. (she laughs.)

E: Do you own any coloured luon?
S: A bit. I have some jewel-tone pieces, Dark Classic Sport Grey, Snorkel Blue, Flush…but mostly black. It’s about proportion and function at that point.

E: Before you were at lululemon you were...
S: Before I was at lululemon I was President of Speedo North America and before that, I was the VP of Women's at Levi's.

(At this point, the accessories designers interrupt with a colour board to show Sheree. It’s for upcoming water bottles. I get to observe a really unique moment where Sheree challenges them to get inside her head and try to understand what’s working for her and what is not. I have never seen anyone speak so passionately about colour’s ability to inspire, to drive emotions and to communicate.)

S to designers: The colour has to blow me away – I mean literally. It has to blow me away. This finish? (She points to a metallic bottle) This slays me. I walk by this and think “quality”. It’s really just a water bottle. It’s the opposite of intellectual. It’s purely creative. Are you with me?

(After ten minutes of interacting over water bottle colours and graphics, the designers leave the office to go back to the drawing board.)

S to E: Did that make sense? Did I communicate that well?

E: Yes, I get it. I have a mother who did women’s colour analysis in the eighties, so I totally get the whole language of colour thing. I’m curious: how many black pairs of shoes do you own?
(She’d rather not comment, but she did mention she’s in the triple digits. Whoa.)

E: Who’s your style icon?
S: I don’t know. It’s hard for me to say. I don’t really think anyone dresses that great these days. Who rocks hard? (Sheree looks at Janine, a designer who is standing within earshot.)

E: Ok, if you take “style icon” and replace that with whose work do you love?
S: Oh, easy. I love Givenchy. Ricardo Tisci, McQueen - I love Rick Owens. His favourite colour is black too. We're soul mates.

E: Black or red licorice?
S: Black!

E: White or dark chocolate?
S: Oooh, it depends on the brand.
Janine: Gummi bears!
S: GUMMI BEARS! Vitamin Gummi bears! (We all laugh.)

E: Favourite workout?
S: Kundalini Yoga...at Semperviva with Gloria, or Yoga West with Hari Singh, or Ghurmuk Kaur Khalsa when she’s in Vancouver. (I find this amusing. A lot of people who practice Kundalini wear all white.)

Goals for the year?
S: Go to Harvard. (Check. She heads to Boston for a two-month leadership course on Saturday. Ironically, she’s wearing a stunning cherry red cropped jacket to celebrate. There’s a long silence. She looks me square in the eyes.) Truthfully, I am so wrapped up in work that the thing that I really care about – really care about – is that the team that I work with is the most inspired, happiest team in the world. That is it. I can’t think of anything else that I’d rather have. Except more yoga. Do more yoga.
Erika (Sheree's Executive Assistant): …and drink more water.
S: More water, yes.

E: …out of a sexy water bottle?
S: Yes, out of a really sexy water bottle! Exactly. It has to be chartreuse. No, really. (Her expression goes completely stoic.) Chartreuse is the number one colour in the world.

Last week there was a question buzzing around the Digital team: what do you love to work out in: pants, crops or shorts? We spun it to our friends on Facebook and got a tidal wave of feedback.

we asked: pants, crops or shorts?

Last week there was a question buzzing around the Digital team: what do you love to work out in: pants, crops or shorts? We spun it to our friends on Facebook and got a tidal wave of feedback. Bottom line is this: everyone has an opinion. The question is really not that simple but people really love whatever they choose.

How Do Your Pants Make You Feel? from lululemon athletica on Vimeo.

pants?

It goes without saying that people in colder climates love pants more than those in sunnier spots, but weather aside, why do people love their pants?

Muscles stay warm. Cold-weather runners and yin-yogis agree. Injury prevention never looked better. Wicking fabrics mean you're warm without being sweaty.

They're perfect for instructors. They're not working like the rest of the class and that extra length does a body good.

Razors last longer. Why shave your legs when you can wear pants instead?

They're versatile. Reverse them, roll them, or cuff them. (If you're feeling adventurous, hem them into crops. Speaking of...)

crops?

If Goldilocks shopped at our store, we're pretty sure she would only buy crops. The consensus is that they're not too cool, not too hot, not too short and not too long - they're just right. Perhaps the ultimate in versatility, here's what people love about crops.

They have built-in air conditioning. That breeze on the calves feels so right when you're working so hard.

You can get a grip in hot yoga. A lot of guests like how they can hold tree pose more easily with a little help from their crops.

Spin class has no surprises. There's no chance of catching a hem in a pedal.

Your skin can come out to play. If you've been working on toning your legs but shorts are still a bit frightening, crops are the perfect choice. (You have to start somewhere, right?)

shorts?

'Tis almost the season for sunscreen and sandals. In the summer months, most people whip out their shorts for their workouts but even guests outside of California, Florida and Arizona wear shorts all year long. Here's why.

Hello, maximum freedom! Nothing feels better than wearing nothing at all and shorts are the closest thing.

You can wear them like a trophy. The best reward is feeling fearless in your Speed Shorts.

They go the distance. Clocking major miles in shorts is the way to go for all our marathoners out there.

You can't hide. They're the ultimate "hold me accountable for my form" sign for instructors worldwide, a major plus for those looking to take their fitness up a notch.

if you're here to shop

We offer a lot of our favourite styles in varied hem lengths so you don't have to choose one fit over another. You can find your favourite Groove fit in pants, crops and shorts. Same goes for the Relaxed Fit and Wunder Unders. (FACT: The Boogie Shorts fit just like your favourite pair of versatile tights.
Elim loves the Wunder Unders so much, she wore them for 31 days straight.

"Somewhere in the world, lululemon is paying unicorns to watch 'The Notebook'."

OK, maybe not, but it's the funniest thing we read online this week. Say hello to our newest print: Unicorn Tears.

If brevity is the soul of wit, we'll keep this brief. Don't let this be you.

so how do you wear prints?

We're all about function when it comes to our products. Print or no print, our gear has the technology you need to perform on your mat, on the pavement or in the gym. It's fun talking about the colorful side of the equation though, and technically speaking, we're all for it. Here's what our designers say about wearing prints.

Start small. Less is more for beginners. If you're on the fence, start with adding a hint of print to your workout repertoire. Think small accessories - a headband here, a bag there.

Don't be afraid to dabble. Adding a colourful tank or bra does wonders for the workout wardrobe.

Consider mixing textures. Combining prints of varying intensities creates interest (and you're one interesting person, so go for it.)

Go big and stay balanced. If you've got the colourful personality to boldy rock a loud print, keep things anchored. Our designers love big splashes of Unicorn Tears (like the Downtime Jacket pictured above) with any of our solid black or charcoal pants or crops.

(The Downtime Jacket is going to be an online-only item. If you're interested, sign up for our email to find out when it goes live.)

want more?

Learn about what you're wearing. Read about the technical fabrics you love.

Tell our designers why you love it - or hate it. We love feedback. Speak your mind.

Watch unicorns cry. See what is currently available in Unicorn Tears.

Browse by colour and print. We've got something for men and women.

Talk about too much of a good thing. Tread carefully.

Don't let the unicorns' tears be in vain. Wear your prints well. Special thanks to Colin, our Graphic Artist, for creating such amazing prints. We love Unicorn Tears. Do you?

We adore our designers. The team recently left the office behind and "worked" in Europe for a week. (Tragic, right?) We asked Katie, our accessories designer, if we could tag along. (She mentioned luon and a faux-fur vest in the same sentence. Ooh la la.)

Twice a year, the Design team gets turned loose in Europe. Our mission: get educated and inspired. (This is one of the many times I stop and ask myself, "How the hell did I get such an awesome life?" )

How the hell did you get such an awesome life, Katie?

This time, the itinerary included tradeshows and beer in Munich, followed by more tradeshows, macaroons, and shopping in Paris. The travel necessities I can never leave home without: luon, running shoes, and a travel mat for impromptu hotel room yoga sessions. The cat didn't make it into the suitcase despite his best efforts. I figured customs might have had something to say about that one.

The bare necessities, cat not included.

We travel in packs and we travel in style. The Bon Voyage Duffel is apparently a clear favorite with the group. With so many organizational compartments, it's a life-saver. (I'm the designer but i'm not biased, I swear.)

The duffel is the new suitcase

Goal semi-completed: "I drink beer in Germany with my flannel-clad boyfriend by September 2011." Andrea was a great stand-in seeing as the flannel-clad boyfriend is still outstanding. (Applications are currently being accepted.)

katie + beer + Germany + flannel-clad boyfriend stand-in = goal 75% acheived

Early morning runs in Paris helped clear our heads and offset our calorie consumption. If there happens to be a shortage of bread and butter in the city of love, I swear it's not our fault.

Au revoir, Europe! We'll be back before you even have a chance to miss us.

The question I hear most often as a designer (right after 'Where'd you get those shoes?') is: 'Where do you come up with all your ideas?'

I suppose from an outside point of view, the design process appears to be a mystery, with new product arriving in stores week after week.

It's actually a continuous process from concept to development to production, and I'm excited to share with you on a regular basis on the lululemon blog what goes on inside the mind of a designer.

Right now, I've got fall on the brain.

Ever since I got back from vacation and discovered that summer has officially ended, all I can think of are cozy layers, soft fleece, and toques.

Here's what's been inspiring me this season:

our amazing elite ambassadors

I had the honor of joining 11 of our elite ambassadors on a retreat in Tofino a few weeks ago. Often what I forget when watching athletes perform is that this is their life. Their schedules are packed with non-stop training, traveling, and competing.

Their dedication and commitment inspires me to create accessories that will make their hectic lives as easy as possible. If they aren't worrying about the bag that's carrying their gear, they'll have that much more free brain space to focus on what really matters: the competition. I might never break a world record, but I can design a rad duffel.

layering

(As seen at Rag & Bone) I remember seeing this collection come out back in the spring. I loved it so much I almost wanted to skip summer and go straight to fall so I could copy every look. I love to layer, and nothing makes me more excited than a great fall transition outfit.

the peace of mind vest

Shannon and her team nailed this one. I can't wait to rock this with a pair of black Wunder Unders, a long white t-shirt, a shrunken flannel, and my new black patent leather Birkenstocks I bought while on vacation. Perfect for a Saturday morning latte run on the way to yoga...or perhaps work tomorrow.

bon voyage duffel

Now that the weather's cooling off, I'm looking forward to getting back into the studio and logging in some gym time. This duffel is the perfect size for all my gear (I don't travel light...even to work) including a spot for my mat. And best of all? It doesn't scream 'gym bag' so I'll look good no matter where my day takes me.

hunter clogs

Brilliant! To say it rains occasionally in Vancouver is like saying it gets a little dry in the Sahara. Wellies are a wardrobe staple from September until June, and rocking a pair of real clogs isn't really all that practical. These puppies let me be practical and stylish... I'm in love.

What's inspiring you this season?

Ugh. I just finished "one of those days." You know those days where nothing goes right and you're left wondering if that fortune teller in Hawaii really put a curse on you? It is on these truly wretched days when I need a super-hero-strength gob of goodness. Most of the time that would mean pizza, wine and a bad rom-com, but today I need to wrap myself in some goodness and it starts with my Scuba Hoodie.

If you are not familiar with lululemon's iconic hoodie it is a staple item for anyone who appreciates soft, warm, thick, preshrunk cotton. The preshrunk part gets me the most when wearing this hoodie because it never changes. Like a reliable friend, it stays true to you and maintains its "hug-like" shape. It also has a no-buckle zipper seam since all zippers are sewn in after preshrinking. Its high neck and large hood will keep you warm and happy.

Hoodie evolution takes time, great guest feedback, and entrepreneurial designers!

2005

The first Scuba Hoodie shape is released as a premium item to wear to and from yoga class. It becomes an instant classic with its short body length, luxurious thick fabric and snug fit.

2006

The Remix Lulu Hoodie is born. With a slightly longer body length, lighter fabric and a shower of artistically colored prints the Remix lulu hoodie has garnered somewhat of a "collectors" item status.

2010

A third iteration of lululemon hoodies is released with the familiar name, "Scuba," and with some additional features. Thumbholes are added, the body length is slightly longer, stretchy side panels are inserted to create a fitted look and unique logos were used.

I am 5'8 with a medium chest and curvy hips and have been in a committed relationship with the Scuba Hoodie for some time. The Scuba Hoodie represents my oath of goodness to myself because it takes me to and from my yoga practice, surrounds me in warmth and has my back -- even on the most disastrous of days.

Want to find out which hoodie might be best for your body type? Take Ali's quiz: Which Hoodie Are You?
