Ingrid is back with her other favourite yoga pose to help remained balanced and stress free during the holidays. Here is why she loves it:

You can prepare for the chaos of the holidays by addressing and releasing your emotions through hip opening. There are lots of fun variations to this pose, including back-bends (for awakening) and sitting upright (for strength). Play with it. Have fun, enjoy and share!

how to get into half pigeon pose and enjoy the holidays

Half pigeon pose is wonderful because it stretches the thighs, groins, psoas, abdomen, chest, shoulders, and the neck. It is also known to stimulate abdominal organs (which is needed this time of year), and helps to open your chest and shoulders.

Step 1: Start in a low lunge, right foot forward, back knee down.

Step 2: Walk your right foot to the left, relaxing your knee and outer shin to the mat.

Step 3: Sit up tall and square the hips.

Optional: If your hips are uneven, place a block or blanket under the right hip.

For advanced practitioners: Reach around to capture your foot to move into a back-bend, which also adds an intense release of your hips and thighs.

Last but not least: Adding a forward bend to your pigeon can also help you to relax. Forward bends turn on our parasympathetic nervous system (rest & digest) and are considered cooling, calming poses.

Repeat on the other leg and keep the peace this holiday season. Namaste.

What yoga poses and exercises are keeping you calm, centered and balanced this season?

whitney's proteinacinno

I'm a vegetarian, so finding protein is sometimes a challenge. I came up with the Proteinnacinno to get my day started off right. This recipe is delicious, makes me happy, and is without question better for me than just a cup of coffee for breakfast.

proteinacinno recipe

1 Scoop Chocolate Designer Whey Protein Powder (or any chocolate protein, I hear Vega is good for Vegans)

1 1/2 Shot of Espresso (brewed on the stove is the best), or a packet of Starbucks Via

1 tbsp of almond butter (I prefer raw)

4 ounces or so of water

1 tsp. of unsweetened organic cocoa powder

6 or so ice cubes depending on if you want a frappuccino or an iced latte version

*Optional 1 tbsp of coconut milk creamer

A little bit of coffee, a little bit of protein and a lot of deliciousness in one cup. Sip and enjoy!

According to myfitnesspal, the iPhone app I use to measure my daily calorie intake, this recipe is about 215-235 calories, 23 grams of protein and only 3 grams of sugar.

What's your favourite smoothie recipe?

Our ambassador, Ingrid Yang, loves tree pose for the holidays and thinks you will too:

There seems no better way to maintain balance during the holidays than tree pose! The beauty of it is that you can take it to any level you desire based on your practice or how you’re feeling that day.

why tree pose is a great yoga pose for the holidays

Tree pose is an all-levels yoga pose that helps you re-centre, and maintain balance and peace within yourself.

Start standing and step your right foot onto your leg with any of these 3 options:

"Holiday Sapling": Toes on the floor.

"Presence” under your tree: Arch on the calf.

The "Giving Tree": Carefully pull your foot all the way up your inner leg!

*You can place the foot anywhere and still gain all the benefits of this pose. But to protect your knee joint, please avoid the knee!

Once you've found your balance, feel free to grow your tree. Any arm variation will do from prayer at your heart for inner reflection, to growing the arm branches of your tree to the sky for jubilant celebration.

Repeat on each leg and enjoy. Namaste and healthy holidays to you and yours!

Special thanks to Ingrid for guiding me through this pose and this post.

What yoga pose keeps you centered through the holiday madness?

We asked our guests on Facebook and Twitter to share the songs that help put a little jingle bell pep in their workouts during the holidays. Here are their suggestions:

healthy holidays playlist

Deck The Halls - Glee Christmas Tribute
Comforting, fun and a festive "gleeful" twist.

All My Bells Are Ringing - Lenka
Love love love this, fun, new, fresh, and not about Rudolph, great beat.

Last Christmas - Wham!
Classic, little bit of 80s for your holiday run or sweat!

All I want for Christmas - Mariah Carey
Is any holiday playlist complete with Mariah? Mariah! She's on fiy-ah!

White Christmas - Michael Bublé
What's a holiday list without a little dose of Bublé?

Baby It's Cold Outside - Leon Redbone & Zooey Deschanel
From the "Elf" soundtrack. Makes your heart warm around the holidays. Sing it with the one you love.

Deck the Halls - SheDaisy
Such a great holiday beat and beautiful vocals. Perfect for half way through your workout.

The Time (Dirty Bit) - Black Eyed Peas
I know it's not a holiday song, but it's really needed on any run or workout you may venture in right now.

Carol of the Bells (In the style of Trans-Syberian Orchestra) - The Festival of Rock Orchestra
First off, this is my ULTIMATE favourite Holidays song of all time. Still looking for the best version, but this one is pretty wicked.

Peace on Earth/Little Drummer Boy - David Bowie & Bing Crosby
Kind of love this mash-up, little bit of classic, little bit of rock.

Run Rudolph Run - Bryan Adams
Gets you moving and makes you remember the late 80s and early 90s with a smile, and you forget how you used to crimp your hair...

Christmas Tree - Lady GaGa
Really fun beat, and shockingly not traditional from GaGa. Little bit of swagger needed to rock out to this one.

Oi to the World - No Doubt
Hello 90s and welcome to my workout. Who doesn't love classic No Doubt?

Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer - Jack Johnson
Such a mellow way to cool down with my old buddy Jack Johnson.

The holidays are a time of joy, crazy family, decadent food, and shopping. We thought you might like a minute to yourself and away from the stuffing, so we've asked our ambassador, January Newland, for a yoga pose to help you restore the peace.

Half Tortoise Pose

January suggested Half Tortoise pose, an all-levels yoga pose known for deep relaxation that can aid digestion. Here's how you get into it:

Step 1: Stand tall seated on your knees.

Step 2: Cross your thumbs.

Step 3: Keeping a flat back and your torso aligned with your arms, slowly begin to dive forward.

Step 4: Reach your arms out and land with your "pinkie" fingers supporting the pose. If possible, try to keep your elbows off the ground.

Enjoy Half Tortoise Pose, and Happy Holidays!

What activity keeps you calm during the holidays?

Our ambassador Ingrid Yang, describes how we can use yoga to be ourselves and heal ourselves.

Meditation combined with yoga can heal, awaken, and inspire you. Our ambassador Ingrid Yang from our La Jolla store writes about adding meditation to your yoga practice and tips on how to begin.
Find the peace within.

how to start meditating

Commit yourself to 5 minutes a day for a week, adding on 5 minutes per week until you reach 20.

Be patient with yourself. No one is able to run a marathon without training, and your brain is the most difficult part of your body to train.

Start by sitting up straight.

Some people like to have an icon to focus upon, with eyes closed or slightly open. Choose what works for you.

Find a comfortable seat.

While practicing, own it and commit to it.

Fight the urge to get off your cushion or mat to check your phone or jot down ideas.

outward vs inward benefits

The outward benefits of yoga seem almost too obvious when we begin to practice: strength, focus, peace of mind, balance. If you’ve practiced, you’ve felt it too. But what about the inner benefits? The more you practice, the more you begin to discover other unexpected and invaluable benefits: such as the way in which we relate to ourselves.

Legs up the wall.

The term that my meditation teacher uses is “making friends with yourself”; the process of letting go of that voice inside that tells you that you have to be something different than what you are. You are already all that you need to be, and the ease that you build in a yoga practice will help you to realize just that.

Modified gentle inversion.

Yoga heals. I regularly teach Yoga for Cancer Recovery workshops and my students cannot sing enough praises about how yoga and meditation have healed their body, mind, and souls. For a cancer survivor, nothing feels better than to proactively participate in promoting his or her own good health.

Meditation fingers.

meditation helps you achieve goals

In our modern lives, we are programmed to think that we will be happier if we do more and accomplish more. A meditation practice helps us achieve our goals by understanding that there is nothing we can do that will make us healthier or happier, than something we can pull from within ourselves.

Floating body rest.

There is nothing mystical or religious about this concept, which may seem unattainable at first. Our practice simply asks us to be ourselves. When we accept and make friends with our true selves, our goals become within reach because we truly understand our potential. The hard work of uncovering that true self is simply up to you.

Reclining cobblers pose.

This practice of yoga and meditation teaches us that there is no thought so brilliant that you must hold onto it. You'll begin to forgive, let go, and create ease in both your body and mind. Teach yourself to let go in challenging situations, and find the best in yourself. Namaste.

Here is a photo guide to restorative and gentle yoga poses for more details about the poses pictured above.

We asked our guests on Facebook and Twitter: What songs get you moving on your runs? You know those tunes that somehow add a little skip in your step or let you finish strong after you feel you can't go any further?

This playlist is about an hour and 15 minutes long and we recommend a lower volume when running outside so that you are alert and aware of your surroundings. A few of these songs contain explicit lyrics, we simply appreciate the beat in our feet and do not promote the ideals portrayed in the songs themselves. Hit the pavement and enjoy!

Warning: it may cause sudden outbursts of dance movements mid stride!

10k running playlist

"Power" - Kanye West
Perfect warm up song. Definitely will get you moving and ready to rock.

"Fly Like a G6" - Far East Movement
This song just makes me want to move, and as much as possible. Still warming up with this song.

"Club Can't Handle Me Right Now" - Flo Rida
Great beat and perfect rhythm to find your stride.

"Commander" - Kelly Rowland
This song kind of makes me want to take on the world. Keep moving and carry on!

"Whip My Hair" - Willow Smith
Really fun song, but try not to whip your hair while running, it actually hurts...

"One" - Swedish Mafia House
Bringing the beat back up after the mellow middle of your run. Great song if you are approaching a hill and need a little push.

“Move For Me” – Kaskade
Mellow melody mixed with a funky beat. This song should remind you to work hard and keep your shoulders relaxed.

“Help I’m Alive” – Metric
Perfect for the parts of your run when you want to remain calm and comfortable.

"Waka Waka" - Shakira
Try not to sway your hips as you're running during this song, and try not to smile, because it can cause both to happen.

"Bulletproof" - La Roux
This song is all about being strong, and has the perfect beat to empower you.

"Heads Will Roll" - Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Has anyone ever told you that you are slow, or have you thought you're not a runner? Anyone doubting you, including yourself? Listen to this beat and these lyrics and make their heads roll with your strides.

"Time to Pretend" - MGMT
Reaching the 3/4 mark of your run, this song is not exactly relaxing, but calming.

"Clocks" - Rhythms Del Mundo
Great remix of Coldplay's original song, with a little Latin spice.

"Gold Dust" - DJ Fresh
This reminds me of a 60s diva power song, but with a modern beat and fun mix to run to.

"Only Girl" - Rihanna
Who doesn't want to feel like they're the only girl (or boy) in the world?

"Dancing On My Own" - Robyn
Awesome beat, makes you want to sing along and takes your mind off of running.

"300 Violin Orchestra" - Jorge Quintero
Perfect cool down song. You will still be working, but ready to slow down.

My favourite cold weather running outfit:

This past week we've celebrated the love of our bodies and have truly found that loving your body comes from within. Yoga is a wonderful, honest and humble way to show your inner self some love. We've asked one our of ambassadors, January Newland, to show us a few practices that will help open us up to self love. Coupled with ujjayi breath, these poses should help you with opening your heart to yourself and the world.

ustrasana, camel's pose

Camel's pose is known as a heart opening pose. Sometimes for those who are not open to love, self love or external, have difficulty getting into this pose because it can make you feel vulnerable. If you focus the energy in this pose toward a love for yourself it may become easier. The pose in general helps to relieve tension and stress.

Learn more about getting into camel's pose.

urdhva dhanurasana, wheel pose

Wheel pose is also great for opening your heart up as it helps to increase your energy, and counteracts depression. Breathe easily and stay grounded through your feet and hands, which should help you trust and be open, allowing you to open up your heart space.

Don't be discouraged if you are unable to accomplish this pose right away. Even attempting this posture without successful completion holds great benefits. Accept where you are with this pose every time you try it, and patience and acceptance itself will reflect inward.

Learn more about getting into wheel pose.

lotus mudra

Mudras in yoga are typically hand gestures that send energy throughout your body and an intention to your brain invoking an overall intended feeling and presence. Lotus Mudra belongs to the heart chakra, and is a commonly practiced when one is feeling lonely, misunderstood, or sad and in need of releasing tension.

Lotus Mudra can be practiced by placing both hands at your heart's center, and touching only the tips of your fingers and edges of the hands to each other. Sit and breathe easily focusing your attention inward. After a few breaths you really cannot help but reflect on all the beauty in your life.

You can use lotus mudra during seated meditation, or in an extension of a posture to open your heart up to change and light.

Find your breath, heart's center, and love your body everyday. Namaste.

I lived in Italy a few years ago, and the one thing I was truly blown away by was the beautiful women. But their beauty was emanating from a different place than their appearance; their beauty was carried in the way they walked, laughed and enjoyed themselves. It's not that Italians are skinnier and healthier than the American women I am used to seeing daily; they simply love and celebrate their bodies regardless of their shape and radiate confidence because of it.

My mom and dad with me in Parma, Italia. The happiest I have ever felt about my body was living in this town...

On the beach of Monterosso, skinny to large Italian women walked in a way that truly took my breath away. Everyone looked amazing and I was truly envious of them. They knew how to love their bodies and I didn't, and it was showing. My self consciousness may as well have been an extra 50 pounds of chub, because it was definitely weighing me down and I decided to drop it on that beach. Coming home from Italy, I started to walk like an Italian for a while. Shoulders back, head up and proud of my body.

From left to right: Jenny the Canadian, Andrea the Italian, me the American. Andrea taught us foreigners to love life through good food, good wine and loving your body for what it is.

why don't we love our bodies as much as they do in europe?

As I write this post today I am reminded that my Italian walk has slipped away a bit, and I want to know why and how to bring it back. I have been asking people around lululemon a few questions about loving their bodies. I wasn't shocked by their answers, but I want to find a way to put an Italian sway in their days. Here is what I found:

Hollis dancing to her own beat.

Hollis, a runner and dream maker, and in the eyes of most women has a perfect body.

Do you love your body?

Most days.

How do you find the love in your body on the days it seems to be lacking?

Exercise or run or cycling when I can't find the love and I am reminded of how strong my thighs are because that's the body part that I hate the most. My thighs give me strength in a conflicting way.

Dane, one handed push up, no problem!

Dane walks tall, works out a lot, and in the eyes of most women, is pretty smokin'.

Do you love your body?

No. I haven't in the past and I'm starting to.

How do you find the love in your body on the days it seems to be lacking?

I beat myself up mentally and then feel better by exercising. Sculpt yoga classes make me feel the best about my body, and when I need the love, I go to class.

Natalia punches it out and always exudes confidence.

Finally, there's Natalia. Natalia is beautiful inside and out, and seems to have it all figured out. When I met her a few weeks ago, I was blown away by her internal beauty and was instantly reminded of the Italian women I so admire. She is an IntenSati instructor and is trying to teach the world how to love themselves through exercise.

Have you always loved your body?

Absolutely not! It wasn't until my teen years when I found exercise that I began to appreciate my body and enjoyed being physical. I can honestly say that I now love my body. IntenSati has a lot to do with that, it reminds me that the point of exercising is not to fit into a pair of jeans, but to feel strong, healthy and confident.

What tips and mantras can you share with those of us who are still working on loving our bodies?

Find a type of exercise that you enjoy. If you feel that exercise is torture or punishment, chances are you will not stick with your routine and that you will feel resentful and angry, neither of which are emotions that cultivate self-love. Of course it should be challenging, but if you hate running or swimming, I would not start by committing to run or swim every day! Try lots of classes and find one you love.

One affirmation I think is really powerful is; I love myself exactly as I am. This helps remind me that even as I am striving to be stronger and more fit, I must begin from a foundation of love for myself just as I am in the present moment. After all, love is always a more powerful fuel than self doubt.

walk like an italian, sweat like a north american, and love your body

In the end what I found was that we North Americans may not show that we love our bodies in the way that we walk and talk, but we definitely love our bodies in the ways we sweat. Now if we can just put a bit more of an Italian bounce in our step, we might be able to convince ourselves and the world of the love we have for our bodies. When you are not feeling the love, find a way to sweat and fake it until you make it. Life's too short and you only get one body, so love it up. Namaste.

The weather could not have been more perfect along the coast of San Diego for my race day. It was cloudy with a light dewy layer that kept me cool and comfortable every step of the way. The first part of the race went slightly down hill, so I booked it, knowing in the back of my mind that the last two miles of the race I faced a slowly growing but rather aggressive hill.

My medal, so proud of it hanging over the San Diego skyline.

One of our ambassadors gave me a race day tip that I will carry with me on every run here on out. He told me to take each mile one at a time, and race yourself mile to mile. Bring a watch and time each mile so you have an idea of your pace by the end. That I did and in timing myself mile to mile, I suddenly wasn't running 13.1 miles, I was running just 1.

Seamless socks, chocolate agave slow burning energy goo, saved my race and my medal is the proof.

I really was happy as a clam to be running this morning. One guest last week told me to smile at every kid cheering along the road and this would pick me up. Totally right, thank you for the tip Kat. I literally found a smile at every mile. The runners around me had become my allies in battle in my mind...At least until mile 9.

Smile like you mean it!

Fresh off mile 8, a looped part of the course where you ran past the runners ahead of and then behind you. I ran past my husband who was a couple minutes ahead of me and I was so happy to see him I found a little more bounce in my step. Then I looked up and noticed a guy in front of me wearing a terrible maroon and yellow shirt that read the words, "Fight On."

My husband Alex, signed up for the race last minute so I would not be running it alone! Amazing huh? Yeah, his training was the carb load pasta dinner the night before...

Now, if you're not a University of California at Los Angeles or University of Southern California alumni, this may mean nothing to you. But being a UCLA alum, and always a Bruin, my blood boiled in reading this. For you Canadians, I guess you could compare this to reading a shirt that said "American Hockey is amazing, so bite me Eh!". Or something like that, I know lame analogy.

Bruin blood runs through these guns.

I have nothing personally against that guy wearing the shirt, it's just in my blood to be upset in seeing these colours and passion for USC. I faced a choice, I could keep my pace, and continue to read the shirt that was clearly affecting my race, or I could speed up and pass the Trojan. So I sped up, passed him, and completed the mile at 9 minutes and 45 seconds. I didn't see him again, but definitely thought about him later in the day.

Almost at the hill!

Coming to mile 11 I knew I had two miles of a hill left. Having calculated my pace in my head, I knew I was a good 6 minutes or so ahead of time so I gave myself 1 minute to walk and mentally prepare for the hill. I made it to the top, and almost asked the crowd on the sidelines if I was actually moving because it didn't feel like it.

I thought I had caught up to the minutes I had banked, so I decided to sprint the last 1/4 mile of the race. My softball coach from UCLA, Sue Enquist, a woman you should definitely Google ran through my head at this moment. When we would run wind sprints and gassers after practice she would always, scream, "Run through the line! Not to it!!" This is a lesson that's translated to much of my life, and in this particular moment came in quite handy.

Literally sprinting through the finish line!

I crossed the finish line, and my time read 2 hours and 17 minutes on the race clock, and I was crushed. My goal time was 2 hours and 15 minutes. My legs were tired of holding me up so I didn't want to wait for them to post my official time.

Later that day, soaking my toes in epsom salt, I suddenly felt proud of myself. I ran and I ran well and that felt better than my time. My husband found online that our official times had been posted, and to my surprise he started to laugh. He said, "So they posted the race times... Your official time, wait for it... 2 hours 14 minutes and 45 seconds!"

Standing strong and ready for brunch.

I made my goal time and it felt amazing. Suddenly I thought of Coach who made me sprint through the finish, and you guessed it, my good friend from USC who I had to pass and thus shed 15 seconds off mile 9. Thanks to him and Coach I ran the race as a Bruin, and achieved my goal time, so fight on I guess!

This entire experience has been amazing, and I really want to thank those of you who kindly lent me your running tips, and compassionate encouragement. I really did feel like I ran with a team on Sunday, so thank you from the bottom of my heart. Until next time, namaste.

This past week I have had the amazing pleasure of hanging out and working out with an amazing group of our ambassadors at the Ambassador Summit. I could not have imagined a better way to spend the week before race day.

Sweaty and happy after a 12k run around Vancouver!

We created and shared our goals with each other, we woke up every morning at 6am to run 6 miles, got our butts kicked with circuit training, and found our OMs with yoga all week long. What I really realized at the end of this week, besides the fact that I am beyond lucky to work with and know these rock stars, they are the running group I have needed all along.

We always remembered to celebrate our workouts together!

As some of you may have noticed by following this blog series, I kind of have a story about myself that I am not a good runner. Along the way you all have been so inspiring and have been my peers that held me accountable to my training and have helped me to realize that there is no such thing as a bad runner. In my long runs I have honestly thought of all of your encouragement and have never second guessed my strength or ability.

These friends are going in the gel pocket of my Run:Empower Crops on Sunday for sure...

It wasn't until I signed myself up for a 12k run with the ambassadors on Wednesday morning that my fear of being a bad runner resurfaced. Needless to say lacing my sneakers up and sizing up the crowd at 6:15am I felt a bit uncomfortable and wondering if I had made the wrong decision. But, I swallowed my fear, which was actually just a huge moment of ego that did not want to be embarrassed, and hit the pavement with the most ridiculously fit running group I have ever seen.

Flexing our muscles after our run, can you find me in tang light?

I was indeed the slowest runner in the pack. My running time was even beaten by a fellow lululemon lady who is pregnant, and rocking it! But, as soon as my feet hit the ground running, I realized that the group around me was empowering me and not turning around to point at the slow girl in the back of the bus. At the end the only thing that mattered was that I shared a beautiful run with wonderful people, and we were united by our joy of movement and not our speeds. A lesson I will definitely take with me on race day this Sunday.

On August 15 I will run the America's Finest City half marathon without a single negative thought, and will finish in 2 hours and 15 minutes.

Can't wait to feel the energy of our ambassadors and all of you on Sunday! Namaste.

P.S. Do you have any race day tips for tomorrow's big race?

Looking for Salutation Nation 2011 info? Visit salutationnation.com to RSVP to your local event.

A few months ago one person from our lululemon family in Washington D.C. set an intention of holding a complimentary outdoor yoga class to be simultaneously held across North America. The goal was to create a shared space for any and everyone to be a part of. She enrolled the team around her, and Salutation Nation was born, quickly to become a movement of health and togetherness our entire community was eager to share.

Yoga mats ready to be rolled out in the U.S. and Canada.

It was this intention that woke me 20 minutes before my alarm went off at 6am this morning. Normally I can continuously hit snooze for a good hour, but this morning I awoke to an amazing energy that wouldn't be dismissed. We were more than 3 hours away from the kickoff of Salutation Nation on the west coast, but the east coast was awake and breathing our intention and sending it my way.

Saluting the sun in Boston.

Waking in San Diego, I longed for a way to connect with the Salutation Nations happening in near minutes on the opposite coast. I opened my computer to find lots of buzz of the yoga about to take place in Boston at the Esplanade, and the Ellipse at the White House. Although I didn't get to take in an OM with the east coasters, I felt them and was so excited for the west coast hour to begin.

Ready to begin in San Diego.

I wasn't alone in my anticipation and was delighted to see familiar lululemon faces, guests, neighbours and new friends in San Diego bright and early at 7:30. We began to lay our mats and an air of wonder filled us all. We didn't know how many people we'd practice with in the park.

We didn't know how many people we'd practice with up, down, and across the coast. We didn't even know if the sun would come out so that we could salute it properly. But it didn't matter. Our neighbours woke up this morning to practice yoga together, and that in and of itself was enough.

We shared an hour together today of yoga and breathing, an hour of enjoying our lives outside. It is days like today we are so proud of the community we commonly shared today. We took in oms with familiar faces, and shared a savasana with people we hadn't met. That's the wonderful thing about yoga, although your practice is entirely your own, the space is shared and connects us to one another without objection, even miles, cities and countries apart.

Thank you for sharing a space with us today, can't wait to see you next year. Namaste.
