image: Tim Snell

We’re celebrating the return of colour this summer and what better way to celebrate the arrival of Grapeseed than with a bottle or three of vino. It could just be the wine talking but we think it’s a pretty sassy shade.

grapeseed, a colour and so much more

I grew up in Oliver, a little town in the South Okanagan. It’s the “Wine Capital of Canada” and its semi-arid climate produces some of the most incredible wines around. Wine is a part of who I am. My mum has been in the industry for years, and I have friends who are winemakers, sommeliers, tasting bar managers … the whole wine gamut.

There are few things I love more than sipping a big, bad Meritage or Merlot on the patio at Burrowing Owl in Oliver. Watching the South Okanagan sun set, and feeling the heat of the desert disappear into night is an event that everyone should experience once in their lifetime.

1/2 corked marathon

One of my favourite wine experiences takes place in Oliver every year – it’s called the “1/2 Corked Marathon”. (It’s so good that this year’s event sold out in less than 48 hours.) Basically, you run about 20km through the vineyards of the Okanagan, sampling wine at wineries along the way. Could anything be more heavenly? Wine + cardio + costumes = my happy place!

personal rituals

favourite wine

Stoneboat 2007 Pinot Noir. Violet, cherry, berry … it’s a truly delicate and classic pinot noir. I catch myself having dreams about it.

Cave de lugny – Cremant de bourgone it’s pink, it’s bubbly, crisp and refreshing; everything you should look for in a bubble.

One of my favourite things about drinking wine, aside from the drinking of course, is the opening of the cork and capsule. Wax? Metal? Plastic? Cork? The feeling of opening the bottle tells a story unto itself!

What the winemaker hopes you’ll experience when settling into that next bottle goes far beyond the wine: bottle weight, ease of opening, texture of the label. They all matter and they all craft part of the story but for me the cork and capsule experience is the “lives happily ever after.”

If you could visit any wine region in the world, where would you go? Napa? Tuscany? Bourdeaux?

There are few things I love in life more than setting big, hairy, audacious goals … and achieving them. I’m a goal setting geek at heart, and am passionate about finding ways to integrate goal setting into my everyday life. Goal setting should be easy. It should integrate into your life with minimal effort. And I really believe that the strongest goal setters are the ones that make goal setting a priority 365 days a year.

I like to use a variety of mediums and formats to keep goal setting fresh, to keep my goals handy, and most importantly, to keep it feeling fun!

How I do it:

1. chalkboard goals

The chalkboard in my dining room! Just cleaned and ready for my 2011 goals to be written.

A set of goals buried away in a desk drawer or in an email folder somewhere doesn’t get you anywhere. Making goals public and visible is one of the most important things you can do to ensure you hold yourself accountable to your goals, and remind yourself what exactly it is you are hoping to accomplish out of this life.

I keep my goals visible on a BIG chalkboard in my kitchen, along with another chalkboard in my dining room. My partner sees my goals and I’m faced with my dreams and ambitions each and every day. This keeps me focused on action. Plus they do double duty as home décor.

2. goals on twitter

I tweet my goals! Any time I come up with a new goal I am working on, I share it with my followers and they help hold me accountable.

3. goals on facebook

Look at the response in under 8 minutes! These are my friends supporting my goal and who will ultimately hold me accountable to reaching it.

I update my Facebook status when I set new goals, again ensuring that my friends help hold me accountable. This also leads to conversation around my goals, helping me flush out the details and create strategic and fun plans to support them.

4. blogging goals

I update my goals a handful of times a year on my personal blog. I like using a list format to feel like I am really making headway, and I cross the goals off through the year as I achieve them. There is a comment function on my blog, and it’s a great space to get support and create conversation around some of the biggest, baddest and scariest goals. I also share my goals on the lululemon.com blog and on our internal company blog. The more people that read my goals means more people that can support me in achieving them in one way or another.

5. goals at work

I have a framed copy of my goals front and centre on my desk at work; framed in a big white Ikea frame. At our office in Vancouver we post our goals in the stairwell. Everyone walking between floors sees our goals, and it’s an incredible way to start conversations and get related with our coworkers.

6. goals as art

I actually frame old copies of my goals and hang them on my wall at home. It’s a neat way to see a progression of my goals over time. It’s humbling to see the goals I set and revised or didn’t achieve, and inspiring to see all the ones I did!

7. writing goals; with a pen

My handwritten “thought bubble” goals I keep on my fridge. Writing goals this way feels more fluid and creative to me!

As the Digital Innovation Manager for lululemon, I rarely use a pen anymore. I tote around two laptops most places I go, and am never more than a centimetre or two from a keyboard. Most of my goals are typed – in one form or another. For me, handwriting my goals feels quite special. I have a handwritten, paper version of my goals tacked to my fridge. There’s something about putting pen to paper that gets the creativity out of me. The format I use when I write my goals by hand also changes. I like to use a brainstorm bubble from time to time. This paints a more vivid picture of my life rather than using a rigid format.

8. email

I use a tool called FutureMe.org! This website allows you to email yourself in the future. Why not try emailing yourself your goals right before their due date? Just last week I got an email from myself (from 5 years ago no less) that asked me if I was “working for myself yet?” The answer is yes (I run a business in my non-lululemon time) and it felt great getting a kick in the bum from my past self!

9. online tools

Goaltender is lululemon’s goal setting site, and another great resource to set goals. 43Things is another personal favourite online resource for me. I use both of these sites regularly to set goals in unique ways. Changing the format keeps goal setting fresh.

10. goals as passwords

I’m pretty sure this “goal setting tip” secures my fate as being the ultimate geek. For all my online passwords, whether it’s email, Facebook, Foursquare or wherever else I am online, I create a unique password that is tied to my goals. For example, if I had a goal to “Attend 30 hot yoga classes in one month” I might set a password like HotYoga30. Think about how many times you enter a password online each day. 10 times? 200? Each and every time you are faced with that login screen, you’ll also be reminded of your goals. This helps ensure your goals are top of mind and creates a space for goal setting 365 days a year.

What are some of the ways you set goals?

There are more than a handful of people at lululemon that are sure they have the world’s coolest job. Some of us get to educate in stores all day, some travel the world on the hunt for new fitness and fashion trends, others get to host gigantic pre-run spaghetti dinners and guerrilla yoga classes for a living. Meet Liz Eustace – one of these people that pretty much has the raddest job around!

How would you describe your job in a nutshell?

Well – it has a LOT of layers! One of my favorite things is that I get to hang out with some of the funniest, quirkiest, smartest people I’ve ever met . I go into stores all across the east coast and work with teams and support them in their community goals.

I seek out fitness trends, look for ways to support our ambassadors in their goals, work on larger regional initiatives like run, try weird and fun classes, go to events and make friends, host events and make more friends… and get to work with publications like the New York Times, Washington Post, Boston Globe… to name a few. I could go on and on – but at this point, I’m just gushing!!!

What does a typical Tuesday on the job look like for you?

Tuesdays are my call days. I get to talk with my amazing Regional Managers who are all inspiring women! I also work a floor shift and catch up on admin “stuff”. I do most of this on Tuesday since I travel Wednesday – Saturday. It’s also date night with Kristin K, a great manager, and I as we hit a class and grab a smoothie afterwards.

What was the weirdest thing you did in the name of “work”?

Hmmm, weirdest thing that I witnessed was standing next to Mayor Bloomberg (mayor of New York) while he was in his boxers and knee-highs about to jump into a pool. It was a little awkward having a conversation with him . But the weirdest thing I did by far was host a 12 hour yoga / dance festival in Times Square the day of our IPO… my day started at 4am and finished at 11pm and I still sort of twitch whenever I pass by. There are too many stories to tell but I met some very interesting people that day!

How did you find yourself at lululemon?

Well I am Canadian, lived in Vancouver for five years and then found myself in New York at Manhattan’s largest yoga studio as the GM and the Retail Buyer… then Kerry Brown (who was prebranding NYC at the time) comes into the studio to “introduce” me to lululemon… well as a Canadian, it’s in my blood… so as soon as I found out they were looking to build their team… the rest, they say, was history.

Who do you think has the second most rad job at lululemon, after you?

Allison Forsyth – definitely! The most recent event with Mohammad Ali – I mean – does it get cooler than that? And working with all of those elite athletes – the work she does is totally inspiring. PLUS – she is probably one of the funniest people I’ve ever met – have you talked to her?

Read about Allison Forsyth’s most recent journey with the Spirit of the Torch!

Last Sunday I was poking around our stores’ Facebook pages (my usual Sunday morning routine) and I stumbled upon an album that our Kingston, Ontario store created. It was a collection of pictures of cakes, cookies, and other lululemon themed confectionery delights!

The baker, the crafter, and the cupcake eater in me thought that this would make a perfect monthly challenge for November. And so, I asked the troops on Facebook what they thought about a baking themed challenge. Within minutes our fans were begging to be judges, volunteering up recipes, and practically pre-heating the oven! And so, our November monthly challenge was born.

Your mission, if you choose to accept it:

1. Create a lululemon themed sweet treat (I’m baking a cake shaped like Groove Pants – with the Winter quilting themed groove band. I’ve already heard rumblings of a Ta Ta Tamer cake / cupcake combo).
2. Take some pictures of your culinary creations and share it with us on our Facebook Wall, in our Flickr Group, or email them to onlinecommunity@lululemon.com. You never know what we have up our sleeves.
3. Eat said confectionery delights or share with someone in need of a little sweet treat! Everything in moderation right? I like to bake with the music cranked – that way I get a little cardio with my cooking.

There are no rules, and no limits! Want some inspiration? Check out the creations our stores have come up with over the years below:

Above: Carolyn, our senior merchant for mens/accessories/outerwear hits the seawall for a run.

You’ve asked us to share more stories about the people that work behind the scenes here at lululemon! Today, we interviewed Carolyn, our senior merchant for mens/accessories/outerwear and asked her all our burning run questions.

What gets you up in the morning?

Honestly- my dogs licking my face! I’ve always been an early riser especially in the summer when there is beautiful weather to enjoy. I love an early morning run or hike – such an invigorating way to start the day.

When did you start running?

I have two first memories of running- the first was in 6th grade when I belonged to an after school track team and competed in the long jump, 100 yard dash and relay. My favorite (and second) memory is running with my best friend in junior high and high school – we used to run 2 miles downhill to a little corner store, buy Hostess donuts and a kiwi strawberry Snapple and then sit in the park sharing our delicious treats before WALKING back up the hill – not much running involved!

What about running do you like the most?

There are so many things I love about running – I love the social aspect of it, meeting new people and having great conversations during a long run (definitely makes you forget that you are running miles and miles). I also love going for runs by myself, listening to my ipod and losing myself in the music – I am convinced that my ipod knows me because it always seems to know what mood I am in and what songs I need to hear.

What are some of the biggest races you have been in?

Definitely the Boston Marathon – it was incredible being around such elite athletes, such an incredible experience. In 2006 I ran the Chicago Marathon – there were so many spectators throughout the whole course which was so awesome. The most random race I did was the Powerman Duathalon in Birmingham, Alabama. I did this through team and training in 2003 – it was the first time I had ever competed in a race with truly elite athletes. [Editor's note: read more about Carolyn's training for the Boston Marathon here]

What is your favourite running moment?

I have two favourite memories. The first was in 2006 when I ran Chicago. I ran it with a friend that I had trained with. We had been running together for about a year when we ran the marathon and it was her first marathon. I remember crossing the start line holding hands with a huge grin and teary eyes as I thought about the endless early morning runs through the snow and ice and how it had all brought us to that moment. We both qualified for Boston in that race. My second favourite memory was last December when at mile 24 my husband knowing that I qualified for Boston joined me for the last 2 miles and told me that he had already booked our trip to Boston.

What lululemon running product do you like the most and why?

There are so many – where to begin?-I love the Run:Ultra and Run:Speed short. The Empower Crop are definitely the best for spring and fall running. For tops, the Cool Racer back is perfect, light weight, comes in all different colours and works perfectly with a sports bra.

For fall running, what types of product do you recommend?

The Run:Hills pullover is fantastic – the cut is very feminine and the fabric feels like butter on your skin. I am a big fan of the Empower Crops as they are the perfect weight as the weather gets a little cooler. The Run:Swiftly top is also a favourite of mine. The fabric is incredibly soft while moisture-wicking and extremely breathable.

How do you describe the lululemon run line?

Candy – you want one of everything, and if you start with one you keep going back for more because the fit and feel of the product is amazing.

What are your running goals/BHAGS?

I think my biggest goal is to run a 3:05 marathon by the time I turn 35, so I have four years to train. Other than that, to always enjoy it and make it a part of my life. I never want to get to where I feel like I have to run – there are too many other things in life that we have to do.

Meet Melissa! She manages to mix work and play daily at her job in Store Development. She’s regularly spotted breaking a sweat in a circuit training class, in between calls on her Blackberry (she’s attached at the hip to that thing!). Melissa is a do-er, and though I haven’t worked directly with her (yet!) she is known around the lululemon parts as someone who gets stuff done!

What do you do at lululemon?

I’m a Project Coordinator … “What does that mean?” is usually the next question I get. Basically I manage the process of construction related projects. I do this for showrooms, minor works (adding slat walls, adding lighting, replacing floors etc), sweeps program, and open re-models (a renovation done on a store while it remains open).

What is a typical Monday like?

Oh Mondays… bike to work, Store Dev construction call where we discuss the progress of each new store we are working on, lots of email catch up, circuit training, get down to business. I like to leave Mondays somewhat free from meetings because there is lots of catch up from the weekend. You have to play the coast game, send out a bunch of emails Friday afternoon and by the time you get in Monday morning all your east coast people have gotten back to you, very helpful.

What are your quotes to live by?

Live simply, speak kindly, love generously, care deeply.

How do you sweat once a day?

Bike, circuit training and now the Grouse Grind. I like to mix it up or I get bored.

What is your 10 year goal?

Hmmm…. Blissfully married to the man of my dreams, living in Vancouver by the beach, working part time, traveling the rest.

This afternoon we put our lululemon office coffee to the test against the new Starbucks VIA instant coffee. Can you guess which came out on top?

Sheena – very thrilled at the idea of instant coffee!

Ronnh – not convinced the ‘Bucks could beat our regular office joe.

Monica, our VIA chef! Time to the tear the package…

The powder goes in the mug! That was easy!

Adding hot water…

Our office coffee… is it up to the challenge?

Here goes – pouring the office coffee …

Nat doesn’t know which mug is which. She drinks regular Starbucks drip coffee each morning.

Hint: Blue mug = Office Coffee, Purple Mug = VIA

Nat was not a fan of the blue mug coffee. Fail. This was our office java.

Yum! Nat loved what was in the purple mug – and knew it was the Starbucks coffee. She said it tasted exactly like it was fresh from the store!

Yep! We have a WINNER! Starbucks VIA clearly beats our office java.

And now .. back to work!

What is your role at lululemon?

Director of Ecommerce / Guest Education Centre.

What’s your favourite part of your workday?

Birthday celebrations/baby showers (there’s a cake every week!).

How do you think others would describe you?

Passionate – I love my job, food, lululemon, podcasts, travel – basically a lot of things.

What’s your favourite yoga class? Why?

I love hot yoga. It is a hard work out, and I feel incredible after.

How do you usually sweat once a day?

Running. My favorite schedule is arriving to the office, hammering out some emails and then hitting the pavement.

What’s one activity/fitness trend that you’ve been dying to try?

Bar Method. I did it a few times, and it was brutal.

What’s your biggest guilty pleasure?

McDonalds – Big Mac Meal, large fries and vanilla milk shake (yes, I know – poison).

Chip Wilson grants you the ability to switch places with another person at lululemon for one day – who do you choose?

I would be Eric Petersen, our head of Community. From the Olympics to branding to local events – what an exciting job!

What are your words to live by?

“Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?” Reminds me to appreciate every moment, touch others, make a contribution, and life to the fullest.

Interested in learning from the best and joining our team? We’re actually hiring for two pretty great roles that would allow you to work for and learn from brilliant people like Katherine. We’re hiring an Ecommerce Operations Manager and a Guest Insight Analyst! And, I can personally confirm that every day is a party on the Ecomm team.

Above: Ashley is our incredible Recruitment Consultant here at lululemon, and is one of the many reasons why we get to work with so many inspiring people each day.

What is your role at lululemon?

I am a “recruitment consultant” on the People Resources team. I hesitate to even talk about my title because I think it can be misleading… we’re involved in so much here at lululemon…. attraction, sourcing, community, training, coaching, mentoring… it’s a lot more than your typical “post and fill” recruitment role!!

What’s your favourite part of your workday?

Favourite part of my day would be walking down the halls of lululemon and seeing all the awesome people I’ve been a part of hiring and what their world looks like now! I LOVE hearing about the things that have changed in their lives since they started at lululemon, the goals they’ve achieved, and what their plans are for the future. It inspires me!

How do you think your co-workers would describe you?

I think my co-workers would probably describe me as positive, creative, friendly, passionate, redheaded, ambitious, determined, analytical, curious, and maybe even a bit ridiculous.

What ‘s your favourite yoga class? Why?

It changes, but at the moment it is hot yoga at West Coast Yoga… mainly because it is about 10 feet away from where I live and I don’t have to go far when I’m REALLY sweaty after class.

How do you usually sweat once a day?

Doing the grouse grind, yoga, running or dancing.

What’s one activity/fitness trend that you’ve been dying to try?

Barre Method / Dailey Method!!

What’s the last thing you did that scared you?

The last thing I did that really scared me was telling my amazing team that I am moving Scotland in 2010. It was an incredibly hard decision, but I have had “Exploring Europe” in my goals for the past 3 years and I am finally making it a reality.

If we were to see you during a workout, what would you be wearing?

lululemon, of course!

Chip Wilson grants you the ability to switch places with another person at lululemon for one day – who do you choose?

Amy, from our Community Legacies team! Amy has been an inspiration for me since the very first interview. As soon as I met her I was just so impressed with how eloquent she is, her commitment to the environment and sustainability, how she empowers the people around her, and just overall what a hilarious and amazing woman she is. It would be great gift to be able to see the world from her eyes for a day!

What are your words to live by?

“Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life … Don’t let the noise of other’s opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.” – Steve Jobs, co-founder of Apple and Pixar

Inspired by Ashley’s life? Come join our team as a Recruitment/ Sourcing Consultant!

Above: Meet Sheena, one of my brilliant and hard working co-workers!

Each week on the blog our goal is to introduce you to a new member of the lululemon team – someone who works either on our retail floor or behind the scenes at our offices, warehouses, or factories. Today we’d like to introduce Sheena, our Ecommerce Operations Coordinator – aka the person who makes sure that everything in our online store works flawlessly!

How did you come to lululemon?

I had a friend in college who worked for lululemon, it was my first full time gig after I graduated.

What do you love about your job?

The people and culture!!!! I’m the person I am today because people in the store (Yorkdale) and in this office gave me feedback that helped me grow in to a leader. I will use this opportunity for a shameless shout out to Elise, Janice, Kiko, Misha, Vesna, Diana, Bree and everyone who helped me grow – thanks!!!!

What is the greatest piece of advice you have been given in your career?

Great things happen when nobody cares who gets the credit.

What are your tips for balancing work, your personal life, and fitness?

Schedule time for fitness in to your calendar, invite others with you to hold you accountable, make your plans for the weekend early in the week but be flexible enough to change them. Above all have integrity with your commitments. Nobody wants to be around someone they can’t count on.

If you could trade places with anyone for a week, who would it be?

Johnny Depp…and then I would spend the rest of the week staring at myself in any and all reflective surfaces.

If you were trapped on a desert island with only one piece of lululemon to wear for your entire stay on the island, what would it be and why?

I’m in love with Wunder Unders but since it’s only one piece I’ll say my gather tank dress so all my bits are covered when I’m rescued.

Interested in joining the team? We’re on the hunt for an amazingly seasoned online leader to join us here in Vancouver as the Ecommerce Manager. View the job posting here: http://tbe.taleo.net/NA1/ats/careers/requisition.jsp

Meet Amy Curry-Staschke, a truly inspiring leader who improves our products, our company and our actions each and every day! We are lucky to have her.

What is your role at lululemon?

Heading up Global Compliance, Quality Assurance and Community Legacies. This is basically all about elevating the quality of our product and the quality of our actions.

What is a typical Monday at the office?

Walk to work, meet with Jacco about our global factory partnerships, review store product quality feedback from the weekend, go work off the weekend food splurges with Rob’s 11:15am circuit training class, have our weekly quality call with our full QA team to align on goals for the week, hear ideas on improving our environmental and social impact from our advocate team, and huddling with the other product pod leaders to make sure we’re supporting each other and our stores in the week ahead.

What brought you to lululemon?

My first yoga class (Bikram) in Burlington, Vermont, in 2004. Didn’t have proper clothes for it and of course my instructor (Thanks Mindy!) had a gorgeous lululemon outfit on and I asked ’Where did you get that…..?’. The rest is history.

What is your greatest achievement so far?

Gotta list two….(1) Learning at swim at the age of 27 and then doing a Half Ironman Triathlon with an Atlantic Ocean 1.2m swim at the age of 30 and (2) marrying the best man in the world

What skills / qualities have made you successful in your role?

Southern charm, diplomacy, passion and courage.

What are your quotes to live by?

“Kill them with kindness” – My mama
“My greatest fear is not death but not living” – Joel Curry

What are your quotes to work by?

“Real change requires 10x the amount of communication you originally intended” – Carly Fiorina, ex-CEO HP
“If it can’t be measured it doesn’t matter” – Edward Giard, mentor

When you were younger what did you want to be?

A Solid Gold dancer. Seriously.

How do you sweat once a day?

Yoga, long-distance running, circuit training or swimming.

What’s your favorite piece lululemon makes?

Wunder unders

What is your 10 year goal?

Live in an ashram for two weeks.

Do you have a BHAG?

Found and direct the Global Sustainable Supply Chain Program at the United Nations.

Where do you think lululemon will be in 50 years?

We will be the first global company to remain locally relevant – will truly be the hub for health and wellness in every individual community. 50 years? I see about $18billion in revenue, 28,000+ employees and 900 stores, not to mention our online presence – think of the communities we can support and elevate!
