Katie Carpenter, a graduate of the University of Maryland, also holds a Master's Degree in European Policy and Politics from NYU. Katie is classically trained in ballet, modern, lyrical, jazz, and tap. She has taught dance to and choreographed for students of all ages in studios and schools in the U.S. and in France. Katie has also performed professionally with Collective Dance Company and now dances with the Studio 180 Dance troupe.
In September 2008, Katie launched two companies in Annapolis MD. Katie’s dance studio, Studio 180 Dance, Inc., offers dance instruction in the traditional disciplines of ballet, pointe, tap, jazz, modern, hip hop, and lyrical as well as aerial dance, for dancers ages 2yrs through adult, with ballroom and zumba coming in Spring 2009. The studio welcomes all dancers, beginner through professional levels, hosts a competitive dance team, and features a professional company for adult dancers.
Annapolis Dancewear, Inc. , Katie’s second venture, located conveniently next door to the studio, stocks a full range of dance clothes, tights, accessories, gifts and dance shoes for tap, jazz, ballet and pointe, in sizes to fit children and adults.
Among the unique qualities of the studio are Katie’s dance philosophy and her community service. All of Katie’s initiatives are inclusive; her own dance training and her education emphasized the richness of inclusion and diversity and the joy dance brings to everyone; her studio is the embodiment of those values. When she started the studio, she also added an educational element, writing a dance curriculum called Dance Hard/Dance Strong©. The Dance Hard/Dance Strong© program is designed to demonstrate the advantages dance training brings to athletes in both recreational and highly competitive sports. The Studio 180 faculty’s performance of traditional dance forms and aerial forms during the Dance Hard/Dance Strong© presentation is designed to illustrate the relationships among various training programs and dance choreography and curriculum. Katie brings her program and dancers to schools throughout the area, promoting health and dance.
As President/CEO and Artistic Director, Katie’s life is full, managing both companies, teaching and performing professionally.
