a day in the life of the Accessories Design Director
•The Accessories Design Director at lululemon creates premium world class athletic apparel that is acknowledged as leading in innovation, design, function, fit and quality. Accessories Design Director is responsible for creation and development of the line from inception of ideas to production of accesories.
•You are the business owner. You drive the creation and the process. You own your line and where it goes in the future. You lead the pod and you partner with the lead developer, raw materials developer, and sourcing to deliver new fabric, construction and technology. You partner with the merchant on the assortment in the line each season. You drive partnership with all pods to ensure cross functionality and cohesiveness of product lines.
•The Accessories Design Director works with the Advanced Concept Team on developing product that is the leading edge of performance, function and technology.
•You partner with athletes to continually elevate and innovate our product.
•You work with visual merchandising, packaging, training, PR and the Brand Support team on building and telling a story around product.
•You are responsible for leading and inspiring a team of designers – guiding the direction, process and calendar.
•You work one shift per week on the retail floor, and participate in yoga/fitness classes in the community.
•Design and build functional & beautiful/handsome product that will allow our users to live long, healthy, fun lives
•Have a vision for where the line goes next, and what needs to be created developed to get it there
•Source and use color, fabric, trim, and trend research through magazine and trend papers, trend forecasting sites, trade shows, etc
•Awareness of what’s happening in sport and industry – research
•Awareness of how the line is currently performing in stores - work in the stores, lead design meetings, partner with athletes and innovate and action feedback for continual innovation of product
•Work with raw materials and development for innovation around fabric and construction
•Collaborate with the design team and manufacturing partners to achieve ‘state of the art’ opportunities for product innovation, and balance the design and innovation process with getting the product to market on time
•Collaborate with Creative Director on building the season vision and executing with your team
•Prepare and present design concepts that communicate seasonal direction clearly
•Partner with the color and graphics team to give direction and feedback on what’s required in your line
•Responsible for being margin aware
•Responsible for managing team in building thorough and accurate spec packages completed and sent to factories on time
•Review design lines and fit of prototypes to ensure quality garments – fit, function, features
•Communication and travel to offshore factories - excellent communication and partnership
•Manage and ownership over production timelines, calendar and margin
•Training and development of designers and design assistants, and partnership with the lead developer and raw materials developer
•Be a leader on the retail floor, and the design/production team
•Know and be an expert in the yoga and fitness community
•BA, BFA or BS in Design required (or equivalent)
Our “must haves”:
•6+ years relevant industry experience in sport performance apparel
•2+ years experience leading and managing teams
•Strong knowledge of garment construction, patterns, and textiles required.
•Thorough understanding of fiber required
•Natural ability to oversee and lead the team in the design and development of product, ensuring commercial viability with the Product Developer, Raw Materials Developer, Merchant and Sourcing Manager
•Adhere to strict timelines and calendar dates to deliver exceptional product, on-time
•Proficient use of Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Excel, Word, Mac platform
•Ability to travel domestically and internationally
•Past experience communicating with offshore factories
•Actively live and breathe the lululemon culture and lifestyle
•Approachable and available
•Passionate and knowledgeable about yoga, run, and athletics
